LR2 is Land Rover's entry-level SUV. Built with unibody construction, it seats five, and sits below the Land Rover LR4 and the upscale Range Rover products. Despite the LR2 being an entry-level machine, you still get plenty of styling and luxury. Naturally, what Land Rover deems entry would be would be classed as a premium vehicle for many manufacturers. Very popular in the UK, relatively few LR2s are sold in the U.S. The 2014 Land Rover LR2 infotainment system gets a more responsive 7-inch touch screen, now using capacitive technology that promises improved scrolling on the main navigation screen (if so equipped). A new QWERTY keyboard permits phonebook searching. SiriusXM satellite radio gains such improvements as artist memory seek, learn/game memory seek, and instant replay. An 825-watt Meridian surround-sound audio system with 16 speakers and a subwoofer is newly available for LR2 and LR2 HSE models; it's standard in the HSE LUX edition. Beneath the LR2 hood is a fuel-efficient 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with high-pressure direct fuel injection and variable valve timing, lifted directly from the Range Rover Evoque.





We're again drawn to the Aston Martin Rapide comparison, especially with the design of the deep rear bucket seats. The gauges, modeled after popular watch designs, up the class quotient and the massive glass roof helps make the interior feel open and airy. We know many of these elements won't make it into a production car, but Mazda's North American director of design, Derek Jenkins, who oversaw the development of the Shinari's interior, says it's Mazda's goal to add sophistication to future models. One thing that can definitely be seen in future Mazda interiors is a driver-focused cockpit. A close look at the Shinari's interior reveals an asymmetric design that snugly surrounds the driver's seat while leaving the passenger seat more open and relaxed. Jenkins says this will be theme of upcoming Mazda vehicles and help set the brand apart. Finally, the Shinari also features quite a bit of technology that looks forward to the new applications of driver-automobile interactions. The Human Machine Interface (HMI) is split up into three modes: Business, Pleasure and Sport.





A 9-speed automatic transmission with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters and all-wheel drive are standard. The 2015 Land Rover Discovery Sport current balance in the powertrain to the availability of Sport from zero to 60 mph in 7.8 seconds, which about a second slower than average. EPA fuel economy estimates are 22 mpg combined (20 city / 26 highway), which is a few mpg less efficient than competitors. Well equipped, Discovery Sport said up to 4,409 pounds. New Discovery models fitted with the Electrically Deployable Towbar also have an industry-first Nose Load Measurement system. Driver convenience and confidence is heightened in New Discovery with the combination of active safety systems alongside an array of advanced driver assistance features. The feature uses a forward-facing camera mounted next to the rear view mirror to calculate the distance of objects in front of the car. This data is then analysed by a sophisticated on-board computer. In the event of a possible collision, the system alerts the driver with a visual and audible warning. If it detects that the collision cannot be avoided then it will apply emergency braking. Vehicles fitted with Adaptive Cruise Control also come with Advanced Emergency Brake Assist and Intelligent Emergency Braking (IEB). Using the vehicle's forward facing radar, AEB detects and monitors any vehicles that are moving in the same direction. If the vehicle ahead suddenly brakes, the driver is alerted to a possible collision.





Land Rover鈥檚 Discovery series, which includes the LR3 and LR4 models, is iconic. The fifth-generation model was introduced for 2018. As a result, 2019 brings incremental changes. Last year鈥檚 redesign took the exterior of the Discovery in a drastic new direction, exchanging the former version鈥檚 boxy shape for something more dynamic. Still, a few of the traditions remain. The strong C-pillar, the nearly vertical rear end, and the asymmetrical liftgate make the Discovery stand out in a sea of competitors. Land Rover has added color-contrasting roof options this year, in black or gray, to provide a bit more style. The interior is more than up to snuff for a luxury SUV, with large, high-resolution displays and plenty of soft-touch and stitched materials. As before, there鈥檚 room for up to 7 people and 88.5 cubic feet of cargo space with the first and second rows folded, or 42 cubic feet with the third row stowed.

Superior alternatives include the Honda CR-V, Mitsubishi Outlander, Nissan Rogue, Subaru Forester and Toyota RAV4, as well as hatchbacks and small wagons like the Mazda 3 and Toyota Matrix. If you're on a tight budget, even the nondescript Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage are much better choices.

That pushed the company鈥檚 debt deeper into S&P鈥檚 junk category. Quality problems have weighed on both marques: A JD Power survey of 31 brands in June 2018 put them in the bottom two slots. Quality issues have added to JLR鈥檚 troubles in China, where the company had multiple recalls, said John Zeng, MD of LMC Automotive Shanghai. 鈥淭his has greatly jeopardised Chinese consumers鈥?confidence in the brand value,鈥?said Zeng. The marques were therefore especially vulnerable to China鈥檚 slowdown. As JLR struggles to restructure in China, it risks falling further behind German rivals. Turmoil back in Mumbai has not helped. In 2016, a few years after retiring, Ratan Tata ousted his successor, Cyrus Mistry, as chair of Tata Sons, the group鈥檚 holding company. That followed a feud over Mistry鈥檚 plan to shed assets, and his opposition to the world鈥檚 cheapest car, the egg-shaped Nano, among other things. Land Rover still ranks as the most valuable of the major brands owned by Tata Group, which also controls Tetley tea and New York鈥檚 luxury Pierre hotel. 6.2bn in 2018, according to Interbrand.

Evoque's Older Brother Gets Some Love Brands like Jeep, Land Rover and General Motors' now-defunct Hummer all come from rich military backgrounds, with their forebearers having proven their ability to tackle just about any terrain, from desert to jungle. Each has faced the difficult challenge of evolving from battle-tested off-road vehicles to civilian-ready status symbols. For Land Rover, which is arguably to New York City and Miami what the Toyota Prius is to Los Angeles, this is especially true. Yet even so, the British automaker still relies on rugged capability to sell products ranging from Range Rovers with six-figure price tags right on down to the LR2 shown here. We spent a cold, snowy day near Montreal testing the limits of this baby Land Rover to find out. Our biggest gripe about the LR2 overall might be the seating positions. Now aimed at more traditional buyers who shy away from the avante-garde Evoque, the 2013 LR2 carries an old-school, boxy design broadly similar to the iconic Range Rover. Much like the styling updates made to the LR2 in 2009, the differences incorporated into the 2013 model might only be noticeable to keen eyes.





The Land Rover Defender is hardly a rarity, having sold almost 2 million vehicles worldwide, and is something of a 鈥淩enaissance vehicle,鈥?serving in such diverse industries as agriculture and commercial delivery. Some 15,000 of its 鈥淲olf鈥?militarized variant serve in today鈥檚 British Army. In an on- or off-road urban setting, however, the Defender is now looking to be the comfortable SUV for drivers who still like things a bit hardcore. The 2007 engine upgrade brought in a five-cylinder, common-rail 2.4-litre turbo-diesel from Ford Europe to power this Defender.

The service, called Carpe, offers a selection of brand-new Jaguar Land Rover models from 拢910 per month with no deposit. Carpe allows subscribers a new car every year, with no restrictive mileage cap. All servicing, maintenance, insurance and roadside assistance costs are included up front, in what JLR calls an 鈥渦nlimited motoring package鈥? The service has been brought to market by InMotion, JLR鈥檚 venture capital arm, which specialises in high-growth start-up companies in the mobility, transport, travel and digital lifestyle sector. InMotion Ventures managing director Sebastian Peck said: 鈥淲e know there is appetite for unlimited motoring packages and demand is growing rapidly for subscription services that better meet individual needs. 鈥淔or people who love driving premium vehicles but are tired of inflexible contracts, a subscription to Carpe is the solution,鈥?he said. Prices start from 拢910 per month (excluding VAT) for a Jaguar E-Pace, and run to 拢2,200 for a Range Rover Sport HSE. Other models on the scheme include the Range Rover Evoque (from 拢980), the Land Rover Discovery Sport (拢1,130) and Jaguar F-Pace (拢1,325). The flagship Range Rover isn鈥檛 on the list, although the Velar (from 拢1,255) is. While all prices quoted are for buyers subscribing without a deposit, putting money down up-front will lower your monthly payments. A 拢3,000 deposit on the cheapest E-Pace, for example, will reduce the repayments to 拢660 plus VAT. The fully comprehensive insurance is provided by Allianz, and all serving and maintenance is carried out at approved Jaguar Land Rover centres. The Carpe subscription service is available now.
