Toyota Avensis Car Review
The original Avensis had the option of four engines (1.6, 1.8 and 2.0-litre petrol and a 2.0-litre turbodiesel) and three body styles (saloon, hatchback and estate). The station wagon was essentially the Japanese-market second generation Toyota Caldina. All of the range gave solid build quality, excellent reliability, a spacious comfortable interior, generous equipment, smooth ride quality and good refinement, but very little in the way of excitement. A facelift in mid 2000 (which saw the engines fitted with variable valve timing) made little difference to this, although a sporty Avensis 2.0 L SR with bodykit and tuned suspension did become available. The Avensis Verso large MPV was introduced in 2001, with room for seven occupants and 2.0-litre engines only. The Verso's platform previewed the Avensis second generation. The Avensis Verso won Australia's Best People Mover, where it is simply called Avensis, the other variants unavailable to that market. The second generation Toyota Avensis (model code T250) was launched in early 2003 in an all-new format; this time it offered more in the way of driver involvement and visual appeal. Like the Toyota Echo and Toyota Corolla, it was penned by the company's design studio in France.
Below the screen are a horde of buttons and dials. The font used for wording the buttons looks a little big, bland and boring, like something from a Kindergarten's Learn to Read book. Buttons behind the gearshift lever have replaced the original Terrain Response dial, and the handbrake is an intelligent electric brake button. It qualifies as intelligent, apparently, because it adjusts brake force according to the slope and brake temperature. Passive Start is standard on the LR2, meaning as long as you have the key on you, a press of the start button adjacent to the steering wheel is all you need to fire up the engine. The steering wheel is soft to touch, and the buttons are intuitive and easily reached with your fingertips. A 5-inch instrument cluster is behind, displaying information such as temperature and fuel levels, gear position and Terrain Response mode. All of this sits between the traditional dials.
13. If you were to give the 鈥淣ic Stone Design Awards鈥?for existing cars and concepts, which would be your top 3 and why? Hands down, I would have to declare the BMW GINA Concept undoubtedly as the best concept car ever created. When it comes down to it, design is about innovation. Breaking conventions is what we are here to do, to remind people that there are no limits except the ones you put in front of yourself. The Mercedes-Benz CLS is another car I really admire, which created a whole new product category, a four-door coupe. Although the Audi Sportback Concept was a beautiful and more modern interpretation, the CLS is the true innovator. I would also have to give a special mention for the new Chevrolet Camaro. The way the GM design team took the design from concept to production should stand as a model example for all future development (and let's hope they follow suit with the 2nd gen Volt). 14. I understand you鈥檙e looking for a job. What is your dream job? My dream job is to ultimately become the director of design for a major automotive brand/manufacturer. I want to be able to contribute to the development of future vehicles, helping to take "the automobile" to the next level. I personally believe we could be on the verge of a new energy/technology renaissance; one which could dramatically change the way our world looks and operates. I wish to help the automotive industry move in this forward-thinking direction. Those positions take years of hard work and loyalty, so right now I am simply looking for an opportunity to prove myself, and earn a spot in a design studio. Thanks a lot for your time Nicolas and we wish you all the luck for the future!
