Most people who use their trucks both on and off road tend to stay with the stock ring and pinion ratio that is intended for your transfercase. The Series gear carrier is a 2 pin design that is not very robust. If you are making a serious power upgrade I suggest going to an aftermarket carrier such as an ARB air locker or Detroit locker or Trutrac limited slip. The stock 10 spline rear axle is not robust enough for the sock engine and tends to break at around 45,000 miles. The Series II and IIA One Ton models came with ENV axles front and rear. These are the strongest stock axles and differentials available and would be a good swap for high torque conversions. The Series III One Ton Land Rovers came with Salisbury axle assemblies front and rear. The front Salisbury makes for an easy bolt on upgrade for a Series truck.





Of particular concern is the spread of greys into the Glens of Antrim, one of our strongholds for red squirrels in Northern Ireland, in the last 3-5 years. The well known and loved red squirrel population at Belvoir Forest along the Lagan Valley in Belfast has been pushed almost to the point of extinction as greys have moved into their territory. This gives particular cause for concern because, due to its large broad-leaves and mixed species composition, the forest is an attractive destination for grey squirrels moving along the wooded banks of the River Lagan and its feeders. Craig suggests that one idea worthy of exploration could be to create so-called "island sites", or colonies, in the Province for our red squirrels, including selective islands in Lough Erne and Strangford Lough. I asked myself how the repeat failure might have been avoided. The first answer that came to mind is more frequent brake fluid flushes. When the fluid is flushed the cylinders are run through their full travel. Doing that periodically would prevent buildup of corrosion and presumably prevent failures like this. But at what cost? The more flushes would have cost more than the cylinder, and required three service visits instead of the one repair. Some would say the brakes could be bled through air pressure, without moving the pedal. That鈥檚 possible on some vehicles but the problem with that is that you never see the system work through its whole range and that may blind you to another more serious problem. So that may work, or it may replace a harmless problem like this with a worse one. In the end I concluded there is no way to assure a 鈥渙ne-step fix鈥?in a situation like this.

The SM465 was used in GM trucks from 1968 to 1991. They are found primarily in GM and Chevrolet trucks, Blazers, Suburbans and many other models falling under the 1/4-ton to 1-1/2-ton platforms. These have a reputation of being very robust. 1968 - 1978: There were both 2wd and 4wd versions. The 4wd version has a 10-spline output shaft and 4wd adapter housing. The 2wd version has a 35-spline output shaft compatible with a drive shaft yoke and 2wd style tail housing. Internally, they are identical to each with the exception of the output shaft and rear housing. 1988-1991: The last years of SM465 had a 4th gear switch to signal cruise mode operation to the GM EFI Engine Control Module. This version had an aluminium top cover. 6.5" making the overall length to be 18.9 inches. This housing contains fifth gear. 2wd style housings are longer. GM input shafts are 6-5/8" long .





Last night, 60 Minutes had a feature story on the goings-on at tech giant Apple, and most prominently featured CEO Tim Cook. The piece largely glossed over hot-button issues surrounding Apple鈥檚 operations in China staffed by low-wage workers, and it completely avoided talking about the car that Apple is most definitely working on. Despite these omissions, CBS鈥檚 Charlie Rose did talk to Apple鈥檚 chief design officer, Jony Ive. Apple is working on a definitely autonomous, probably all-electric (or hybrid) vehicle, dubbed 鈥淧roject Titan,鈥?and Ive will certainly be involved with the look of this project. Want to know where Ive鈥檚 tastes reside? Ive has also owned a Bentley Brooklands and Land Rover LR3. Though he鈥檚 never owned one, he approves of the styling of the current Land Rover Range Rover. Ive has gone on record criticizing much of modern car design, lamenting some of the more 鈥渟hocking鈥?designs. Clearly from his choice in cars and the products he has designed through the years, he appreciates clean designs that hold up over time, rather than attempts to get ahead of a passing fad. With that in mind, we鈥檙e not so convinced that the sketches that have been kicked around of an Apple Car (bottom image) are what the 鈥淧roject Titan鈥?will actually look like. For a better indicator, check out the Ford 021C concept car (below) that his friend (and now colleague at Apple) Marc Newsome penned in 1999. As stated, it goes for retro-futurism in a way that maybe the enthusiast will enjoy. This is a plucky little car from which the automotive aficionado can determine its vintage influences. And as long as it does its self-driving job right, people will love it. Would Ive鈥檚 vision of the car be a great thing for the automotive world? Ford dealers reported December sales of 233,938, up 3.4 percent compared with a year ago. Car sales were down 22.1 percent, while truck sales were up 13.7 percent. The truck sales increase was led by F-Series' record December sales of 84,278 and higher sales of Ford's No Boundaries sport utility vehicles (Escape, Explorer, Expedition, and Excursion). December sales of Ford's industry-leading lineup of SUVs totaled 59,608, up 10.6 percent compared with a year ago. Lower Ford sales to fleet customers in December adversely affected the year-to-year car and truck sales comparisons. Lincoln Mercury dealers reported December sales of 26,719, down 21 percent compared with a year ago. Car sales were down 31.8 percent, while truck sales increased 20.9 percent. Sales of the all-new Mercury Mountaineer almost doubled compared with last year's launch-affected results. Retail and fleet sales declined at Lincoln Mercury. Jaguar and Land Rover dealers reported their highest sales for any month in history.





The 1994 model year marked the first year that the Discovery was sold in the United States. Airbags were incorporated into the design of the 1995 model to meet the requirements of US motor vehicle regulations, though they were not fitted as standard in all markets. 1995 models sold in the US utilised the 3.9-litre V8 from the Range Rover SE models, and later models saw a change to the 4.0-litre version of the engine. The Series II Discovery debuted in autumn 1998 and in the US in 1999. Land Rover promoted that the Discovery Series II had been modified with 720 'differences'. The interior and exterior was re-worked to be less utilitarian, but it was still similar to the Series I. Every body panel was new except the rear door outer skin. The rear body was extended to improve load space but at the expense of added rear overhang, which adversely impacted off-road ability. Changes to the diesel engined models saw the 2,495 cc Td5 (in-line direct-injected straight-five engine introduced, in line with the updated Defender models. This electronically managed engine was smoother, producing more usable torque at lower revs than its 300 Tdi predecessor.

Low range first gear is way too low for most off road driving and there is large ratio gap between first and second which often leaves low range second too high for a lot of off road conditions. For most technical off road driving a low range first ratio in the range of 55:1 to 50:1 at the axle is close to ideal. The Stock Series low first ratio is 40.7:1. Granny first gears will give you a low range first somewhere in the 80:1 to 70:1 ratio area. It is very hard to keep engine RPMs steady with those ratios. Four speed gearboxes are close in length to a Series gearbox so you can usually fit the engine and gearbox in the truck without moving the transfercase rearward from the stock location. A five speed gearbox is longer and you will need to move the transfercase rearwards. This will require moving the transfercase cross member and custom prop shafts. Moving the transfercase towards the rear will place the front prop shaft closer to the bulkhead cross member.





This should allow it to appeal to the younger generation which is not really looking to buy crossovers anymore. The interior of the car is also going to be quite special and nothing like that of its predecessor. If the rumors are true then the 2019 Land Rover Defender will get a nearly identical cabin to the Range Rover Sport. This should definitely make it a rather impressive car but it might take away from the versatility that made it famous. The most basic version of the upcoming Defender is more than likely going to use a 3.0 liter turbocharged V6 diesel. With around 250 horsepower and over 400 lb-ft of torque, this should allow the SUV to go pretty much anywhere. Further up the range the car should get a 3.0 liter supercharged V6 which may provide anything from 340 to 380 horsepower and up to 332 lb-ft of torque. Both engines might receive not only an 8 speed automatic but also a 6 speed manual. Like before, a four wheel drive system will be standard across the range. While it still is quite early, it looks like a sports version might be in store. This should boast a larger 5.0 liter supercharged V8. With as much as 550 horsepower and over 500 lb-ft of torque, the Defender might have what it takes to tackle the AMG G-Class.





When the Rover Co was having engineering differences of opinion with the development of the Whittle turbine engine, the Wilks' did a deal with Rolls-Royce to swap technologies. The turbine engine project went to Rolls-Royce and Rover Co took over the V12 Meteor production used in the Centurion Tank. From this a V8 variant was developed the Rover Meteorite, also known as Rolls-Royce Meteorite, was a V8 petrol engine of 18.01 litres (1,099 cu in) capacity. In essence it was two-thirds of a V12 Meteor, and it shared the Meteor's 60掳 vee angle. Meteorites were built for vehicles, for marine use and as stationary power units. As the aluminium block made this engine one of the lightest stock V8s built, it was an obvious choice for use in racing. Mickey Thompson entered a car powered by this engine in the 1962 Indianapolis 500. From 1946 to 1962 there hadn't been a single stock-block car entered in this famous race. In 1962 the Buick 215 was the only non-Offenhauser powered entry in the field of 33 cars. Rookie driver Dan Gurney qualified eighth and raced well for 92 laps before retiring with transmission problems.





To centralize transportation and distribution centers Penske created 10 ODCs for the purpose of having a central delivery point for suppliers. With this in effect shipments would now be cross-docked into trailers at the ODCs and loads would be delivered on a schedule basis instead of delivering half empty trucks. For carrier and premium freight management Penske goal was to maximize carrier service and minimize carrier costs. Since there were more strict requirements for carriers they would now have to meet safety, technological and equipment specifications, provide experience and certified drivers and most importantly show proven experience of on time delivery and pickups for the customer satisfaction. Carriers would now have a 15 minute window for on time delivery and pickup, also a manager will be on site for proper handling and order accuracy. Penske implemented new and advance information technology solutions, but one that caught my attention was the fact that drivers will now be provided with PDA scanners and an electronic driver log to process the claims faster and order receipts.





Just like Fred and Wilmas! I had a shower and was looking forward to good nights sleep. On pulling back the covers i found two baby mice trying to sleep in my bed! I climbed into bed and started to read only to be interupted ten minutes later by mummy mouse appearing on my shoulder, would you believe, looking for her children! Oh my God, this was too much. I am now standing on the bed trying not to make too much noise and wake up Derek and Wizzy. Andy. Their was a walking stick in our room, probably for such purposes, Andy grabbed it and rattled it about under the bed thinking that these things are more afraid of us than we are of them! Unfortunately for us this was not to be the case- Mummy continued popping up all over us all night looking for her children. We tried to sleep with the sheet tucked over our head and behind our shoulders.
