Land Rover in general and the men and women of its Special Vehicle Operations division in particular deserve suitably gigantic congratulations for the new Range Rover Sport SVR. After our five-star road test verdict on the car landed only the other week, we hope they鈥檝e had plenty. Back to business. This 2.3-tonne marvel now has a target on its back big enough to cover a double-garage door and the time to defend itself has already come. Welcome, then, not just one but two BMW performance SUVs out to catch the Range Rover in a pincer movement worthy of Hannibal himself. First and foremost comes the obvious rival: the all-new X5 M. It鈥檚 more powerful than the SVR, it鈥檚 quicker, it鈥檚 cheaper and it鈥檚 from a performance sub-brand with almost four decades of history. It鈥檚 the kind of car that simply demands to be lined up against the reigning power in its particular class on a quiet stretch of B-road and allowed to decide its own fate. And so it shall. Then there鈥檚 the dark horse: the facelifted Alpina XD3 Biturbo.

The unspoken word hanging in the air over the 2016 Range Rover Td6 and Range Rover Sport Td6: still. Range Rover, the luxury SUV imprint of Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) and currently a brimming fountain of Yankee cash, is still following through with its plan to offer diesel powertrains to the U.S. This, despite the recent unpleasantness known as Dieselgate, Volkswagen鈥檚 emissions-cheating scandal. Talk about climate change. Five years ago diesel was the great green hope, a conventionally handled fuel with about 20% higher fuel economy and lower CO2 emissions. With low-sulfur fuel and post-combustion urea-injection systems to reduce NOx (nitrogen oxides), diesel light-duty vehicles could pass even California鈥檚 stringent tailpipe tests. Today, thanks to VW, diesel鈥檚 brand is in disgrace. Meet your new spokesman: Jared. The good people of JLR understand the timing of their push is less than optimal, but they note heavy industry doesn鈥檛 turn on a dime. They make the case, reasonably, that there remains a cadre of unserved Jaguar and Land Rover/Range Rover clients who prefer the range, durability, ready torque and efficiency of diesel.

The term 鈥淩ange Rover鈥?holds a powerful place in premium off-road travel with the brand鈥檚 鈥淓voque鈥?subcompact SUV establishing itself as a stylish and capable luxury vehicle. The outgoing model鈥檚 strengths included a distinct exterior design, plush interior materials and off-road capabilities worthy of the Range Rover badge. The new Evoque retains those characteristics while infusing a healthy dose of advanced technology. The 2020 Range Rover Evoque鈥檚 all-new architecture features a longer wheelbase and more efficient packaging in an exterior footprint nearly identical to the outgoing model. The new chassis is 13 percent stiffer and uses rigidly-mounted subframes to reduce cabin noise and vibration.

The concept had what Jaguar called 鈥渁n assured driving position鈥?set at 鈥渁 low height鈥? similar to that of an Evoque, and this is likely to be a staple part of the F-Pace driving experience. The C-X17 concept also featured a muscular ridged bonnet. This hallmark of other Jaguar models appears to have been retained under the camouflage of the F-Pace prototype. The spy pictures also offer a glimpse at the cabin and dashboard of the Jaguar F-Pace. Aside from the data-collecting apparatus, it bears little resemblance to any current JLR production model, suggesting the Jaguar F-Pace will reach production with a fresh interior look. The launch of the new F-Pace marks the first time the 80-year-old manufacturer has entered the SUV market. The new SUV squarely targets Porsche鈥檚 Macan and BMW鈥檚 X4 models. It should command a starting price of about 拢35,000, reaching upwards as far as 拢50,000. The new car is expected to become one of Jaguar鈥檚 two best-selling models, performing strongly in major markets such as China and the US and rivalling the volume of the upcoming XE compact saloon.

And in time orders were received from Belgium, Brunei, Guyana, Holland, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Jamaica, Libya, Saudi Arabia and the Sudan. Most Lightweights had the 2.25L petrol engine, however the British Armed Forces did take some with diesels for specialist uses. In fact all those supplied to the Netherlands were Diesel powered. Bodies were generally soft top but hard top versions could be ordered. Several "special" Lightweights were produced over the years. This version was designed as an emergency forward area ambulance. It was capable of carrying two stretcher cases by the addition of a canvas "box" protruding from the rear. In relation to the 2008 model, the changes in appearance that receives the X-Trail in 2010 are shallow. The most significant are in the front. At the rear, among other minor modifications, pilots protrude LEDs. Because the body has different parts, all dimensions increase slightly (it measures 4.64 m long, 1.79 m wide and 1.70 m high). Inside vary some coating materials, the seats and the dashboard: the speedometer and tachometer are larger and easier to read. Between them there is a screen with white indicators that give much information to the driver. Among other functions more or less common, is one that warns the driver when to take a break and a gearshift indicator for consumption is minimized. It also improves the ventilation system for the cabin caldee faster in cold and warm weather so cool before. The glove box can be cooled and heated. The X-Trail is available in three trim levels: "XE", "SE" and "LE". All versions come as standard with six airbags, climate control, stability control and alloy wheels, 17 inches in the "XE" and "SE" and 18 inches in the "LE" -. The other new item of equipment is the 'Nissan Connect', which is a 5-inch screen where coalesce all functions related to radio and CD system, navigation, hands-free phone connection with "Bluetooth" and management devices "iPod" and "USB". Other interesting items of equipment are heated rear seats (front can also have it) and the rear view camera. It can display the image in a part of the interior mirror. Nissan has developed this option for customers who do not choose the navigation system.

The Audi Q5 is an impressive car with a large boot and generous interior space for passengers. The Q5 is available with six engines. Petrol fans can choose from a pair of turbocharged 2.0-litre units that produce 178- and 208bhp, and a 237bhp 3.2-litre V6. However, the 141- and 168bhp 2.0-litre diesels make more sense because they鈥檙e strong, flexible and significantly cheaper to run. A 3.0-litre V6 diesel completes the line-up. The Range Rover Evoque is equally as impressive and offers a choice of three engines, two body styles, three design themes and a wide range of options and accessories. It is the most economical Range Rover with a 2.2 litre diesel engine expected to get close to 50mpg with stop/start technology. The Audi Q5 wins on space and practicality there is plenty of room for four adults and still room for 540 litres of luggage which is trebled with the rear seats down. The rear seats fold and recline, and there's the option of runners that gives them 100mm of fore and aft travel. A folding front passenger seat is also an option. Space inside the Evoque has enough room for four people, although the Coupe is a little tighter than the five-door, and gaining access to its rear seats is tricky. In both bodies the rear cabin is fairly dark, but the optional panoramic glass roof brightens things up. The Evoque's boot is a little on the small side and its rear seats don't fold completely flat.

Those figures are a few ticks behind the Honda HR-V, Mazda CX-3, and Hyundai Kona. The Jeep Renegade and Fiat 500X are less efficient at 21/29 mpg with all-wheel drive (22/30 mpg for front-drive models) and nine-speed automatic, but they鈥檙e also more powerful. Now, to livability. Because it鈥檚 a crossover, the Ford EcoSport has to be practical, right? Not quite. The cabin is intimate, which means despite having belts for five, you should limit occupancy to four adult passengers unless you want to feel squished in the back. The front seats are narrow and lack side support, especially for bigger adults. Interior build quality is not a strong point with a cabin filled with hard, brittle plastics. Even the soft, padded surfaces near where your elbows and forearms would relax (as well as those on the dash) feel cheap. Some of the panel gaps are wide enough to fit a (skinny) finger.

Behind the wheel is a 12-inch Interactive Driver Display, which is essentially a high-res TFT LCD screen, while a heads-up display with a full-color projection measuring in at 10 inches puts critical info right onto the windscreen. If you like it more old school, complementary infotainment controls are placed on the steering wheel. When it comes to the tunes, the Range Rover comes with a selection of unique Meridian sound systems, with the range-topper putting out 1,700 watts through 29 speakers. Further entertainment is offered with the 10-inch touchscreens mounted in the front seat backs, providing entertainment for those seated on the rear bench.

The one on the right (the rear bolt hole) is clear and that鈥檚 what you want to see. The orange is sedimented Dex-cool. Sedimentation is a known issue with Dex cool and it's particularly visible here. It looks very different from freshly spilled coolant, like you get from teardown. Scroll down the page four more images and you'll see freshly spilled coolant in a head bolt hole. There's no mistaking the difference. There are some motors where the head bolt holes go into the coolant galleries. This isn't one of them. These holes should be dry. The fact that they are not suggests a crack or leak somewhere. The blowout has damaged the head slightly but it's nothing we can't fix with a weld and resurfacing before the valve job. Right now, that is the least of our worries. Like I said, that dried coolant is a bad sign. There are no coolant passages from block to head in the middle cylinders of a Rover-Buick V8.

So I'm guessing their staff is a little uninformed. I was excited to get into a Tesla. They knew my exact age when I walked in there but still proceeded to schedule a test drive appointment. John Holden: My last SIII had free-wheel hubs as well, but I think I hit some rocks somehere and one side was cracked, leaking. Nevertheless it wasn't the end of the world. I got another few hundred miles out of her before she was 'nicked'. Now she's probably in bits somewhere. She had a few issues at the end, though. The alternator went up north last October, the job wasn't properly done so she was back in the workshop a couple of weeks later. There were too many other issues to list here, but she might not have sailed through another MoT test next January. I was on a 'green-laning' day out a few years ago, slogging through thick mud but still going. Fellow in front of me drove a Range Rover with road tyres, get that! Enough to say he got stuck and I had be towed out as well after that. I've been over moor and field before, never have I been stuck until this comedian got in front of me! I shall soon see what this one's up to, nevertheless.
