Easily the most attractive and stylish interior we've seen in a Mazda (concept or not), it's swathed in authentic aluminum trim, leather-covered surfaces and double stitching at nearly every turn and twist.

It鈥檚 the most expensive Range Rover ever produced, with prices rising to 拢177,030 for the 5.0-litre supercharged V8 model. JLR鈥檚 Special Vehicle Operations division develops the SVAutobiography, with the team focusing on luxury for those in the back. 鈥楨xecutive Class鈥?rear seats have been fitted, providing 1.2 metres of legroom thanks to the long wheelbase format. The heated seats can also recline to a maximum of 40 degrees and have calf and footrests. Each passenger in the rear also gets use of a 10-inch touchscreen, which comes with JLR鈥檚 Touch Pro Duo infotainment systems and 4G WiFi. A fridge is located between the two rear seats, with the capacity to hold two wine bottles or four 600ml bottles. The centre console runs the length of the cabin and features heating and cooling controls for rear passengers, while the rear doors are also power operated. For the first time customers can also spec a Power Deployable Veneered Loadspace Floor in the boot to help with loading and unloading items. Three powertrains are offered in the SVAutobiography; the 335bhp 4.4-litre V8 diesel is the entry point to the range at 拢167,850. Over the last several days, I've been thinking about the interview with the head of NASA's science program, Ed Weiler, posted by the journal Science. I have known CEOs of several of companies, including some on the Fortune 100 list. Their egos are quite big enough to take a tongue lashing from Weiler. And what is NASA going to do to punish these companies? Tell JPL that they can't build any more planetary spacecraft? Who else has expertise in a number of critical areas? Or tell Lockheed-Martin or Boeing that they can't bid on any more NASA contracts? There are only 2 - 3 companies big enough to support these missions. Another part of the Weiler interview also got me to thinking. The planetary community is starting another Decadal Survey to prioritize the next decade's missions. 6-8 billion to spend in 2011 - 2020 on new missions in today's dollars. 200 to support ESA's ExoMars mission. If the mission costs are approximately right and there are no major cost overruns, then this is a rich mission set. Mars receives several new missions, Jupiter and Europa finally get their return visit, and there are some smaller missions to provide balance. On the other hand, there's not a lot of room for error here and still maintain a balanced program. If the mid-range rover and the Jupiter Europa Orbiter, for example, overrun by 50% each, the Discovery and New Frontiers missions become unaffordable.

It's fair to say that the new Range Rover Velar was a hit for Land Rover as soon as it arrived in showrooms. With its sharp looks and a cabin bursting with technology, it's one of the hot picks of 2018. But how well does the Velar stack up as a sporty SUV? We鈥檝e tried the most powerful four-cylinder petrol Velar to see. The Velar uses Land Rover's new naming structure, and this P300 features the firm's four-cylinder Ingenium petrol engine (hence the 'P') with 296bhp - or 300PS in metric horsepower. It's the same engine that appears in the entry-level Jaguar F-Type, and despite the fact this Velar is around 300kg heavier, its performance figures are quite similar. On the road, the 2.0-litre model delivers good performance. The Ingenium motor is responsive, thanks to its 400Nm of torque being available from just 1,500rpm. Combine this with the slick-shifting eight-speed auto box, and the Velar has a decent turn of pace even with gentle throttle inputs. That's no bad thing, because if you extend the engine, it doesn't have as sporty the soundtrack you might expect.

I checked out several different interiors, but, in general, I liked the base Sport Version, with its fur/velour-cloth seat upholstery, better than any of the Leather-Trimmed or Leatherette versions on upper-range models. I've seen that even comes close. Not only did the velour-cloth seats look good, but they were, for my frame, also more comfortable to sit in than the Leather/Leatherette seats on the upmarket versions.
