The new Defender hits showrooms in the spring, in two variants. The two-door Defender 90 and four-door Defender 110 will each be available with assorted trim levels and accessory packs to suit various adventures. The two engine options are a 296-horsepower, four-cylinder turbo, and an inline six-cylinder that uses the 48-volt power system to generate 395 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque. Land Rover鈥檚 new infotainment system, called the PIVIPro, will stay powered on via a backup battery instead of booting up every time you turn on the car, so features like the backup camera and the navigation system are immediately available. The surround-view system now uses a more powerful graphics processing unit to replicate the terrain around the vehicle and allows users to quickly spin the view around. It fuses camera and ultrasonic sensor data to 鈥減aint鈥?the landscape, stitched together into a single image. That鈥檚 nice when you鈥檙e trying to squeeze your Range Rover into your garage, but potentially vital for off-roading, where limited visibility means you don鈥檛 see that rock blocking your path forward.
The Cadillac ATS becomes the first Cadillac vehicle to the win the prize, and the fifth from General Motors. Coming in a distant second was the Honda Accord, followed by the Ford Fusion in third. One of the major factors contributing to such a substantial victory for the ATS was its perfect score from crash testing from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. In each of their tests, both the rear-wheel and all-wheel drive variants scored a five star rating, demonstrating an excellent ability to protect occupants inside. The ATS is only the second car to ever receive an overall five star rating, with the first going to the Chevrolet Camaro. The Dodge Ram 1500 pickup won by an even larger margin than the Cadillac, netting a score almost double that of the second place Mazda CX-5. With the 2013 results, North American cars have now won the car of the year award 11 times. Europe has taken home the prize four times, Japan three, and Korea two. For the truck of the year award, domestic brands have won 13 times, with Japan winning four, and Europe winning three. Last year, Korea's Hyundai Elantra won car of the year honors, with Europe's Land Rover Range Rover Evoque taking the truck of the year award.
It's difficult to dislike any V-8, especially one that is as charismatic and effective as this one is at churning out 550 horsepower and 502 lb-ft of torque. While the engine suits the Velar beautifully, its chassis feels less resolved. We drove the SV in Spain, on quiet mountain roads about an hour inland from Barcelona, and also on Land Rover's Las Comes Experience Centre. The Velar impresses in the dirt, with its standard air springs able to increase the Velar's ride height by up to 1.7 inches in its rock-scrambling drive mode. Even when wearing diamond-finished 21-inch wheels, it proved willing to scramble up and down slippery tracks on the same all-season Pirelli Scorpion tires we used on the road. This is a high-performance SUV you could take at least some way into true wilderness. Yet the Velar SV lacks true dynamic focus on pavement. It is softer and more laid back than any obvious performance rival, including the F-Pace SVR.
