Jaguar Land Rover Begins Brexit Shutdown As Sales Fall
The company has also started cutting 4,500 jobs from its 40,000 global workforce, affecting mainly management roles in the UK. Mick Graham, Unite鈥檚 plant convenor at Solihull, said: 鈥淲e had to make some plans to protect the business as best we could and we started talking about this in January. 鈥淲e knew we had to take reactive action to mitigate the potential effect of a bad Brexit or no-deal Brexit. Suppliers need notice to get their parts across to us. Along with other major carmakers, JLR has been stockpiling vehicle components, but can prepare for only days of disruption, rather than weeks, as it uses 25m separate parts per day. BMW brought forward its annual maintenance to April and warned that a no-deal Brexit might force it to stop making the Mini at its Cowley plant near Oxford. JLR鈥檚 factory shutdowns began as the carmaker, which is owned by the Indian conglomerate Tata, released full-year results. JLR sold 578,915 vehicles globally in the year to March, down 5.8%. In March alone, sales fell 8.2%, mainly because of an 11.4% decline at Land Rover, while Jaguar recorded a 0.2% dip. The carmaker blamed weaker demand in China, whose economy has slowed sharply. JLR sales in China slumped 34%, while sales in Europe were down 4.5% because of uncertainty around the future of diesel vehicles, and the impact of new emissions legislation. The effects of the fuel efficiency and emissions testing procedure, called WLTP, have been felt across the industry.
Finally, in 1970, some 20 cars were manufactured for the press launch. To call the launch a success would be understating it a little, with public demand for the new vehicle fat exceeding Rover's ability to manufacture the vehicle. 1972 saw the release of the 4-door model, and it quickly out-sold the original 2-door model. Other refinements included a viscous locking centre differential, the world's first off-road ABS system, electronic traction control, and electronically controlled air-adjustable suspension. This air suspension was another first for Range Rover, and replaced the coil suspension at a time when competing vehicles were finally adopting coils. In 1979 Land Rover announced updated versions of its highly sought after Range-Rover. Of course there were price increases as well, but the lucky recipient of a 1980 Range Rover got tinted glass (all-round), inertia seat belts, power steering, and nylon seat trim as standard. The three-spoke steering wheel gave way to a new four-spoke wheel with thicker rim, instrument visibility was improved, larger twin door mirrors provided a better view, and halogen headlights replaced the sealed beam unit. Side repeater flashers were fitted, a heated rear window, a brake vacuum loss indicator, and improved radio suppression was built-in.
The rear end will get similar upgrades. Square-shaped taillights are new as well and rear bumper is also looking simpler. As for the dimensions, the 2020 Discovery Sport won鈥檛 change at all. That means the SUV will remain 181 inches long. The mid-size crossover SUV will offer a room for five or seven passengers. Interior will get a complete overhaul. The 2020 Land Rover Discovery Sport comes with new Lutex upholstery. Recycled polyester microfiber materials will provide better comfort than before. A 40:20:40 split second-row seats will now provide cup holders for the third-row occupants. Land Rover will also offer plenty of new technology. Moreover, we can expect more safety features. However, most of the new high-tech features will be optional. That includes a wireless charging and the additional 12-volt USB ports. Center console is revised and it sports a 10-inch infotainment display. The multi-function steering wheel is upgraded and it hosts more controls.
Rivals like the Volvo XC40 and Audi Q3 make a much better job of rear-seat packaging. The Evoque鈥檚 boot is up 10 per cent in size versus the outgoing car. There鈥檚 591 litres on offer with the seats up, but this is probably measured floor-to-ceiling; rival鈥檚 figures seem small on paper by comparison, but the difference is not as drastic in actual use. For example, BMW quotes 470 litres for the X2 and Lexus 475 litres for its NX. Fold the seats down and there鈥檚 1,383 litres of space to play with. The rear seats folds on a 40:20:40 split - this can be done via a handle in the boot. The Evoque lives up to its badge when it comes to towing. All Evoque models can tow an unbraked trailer of up to 750kg; choose an automatic gearbox and diesel engine combination and there鈥檚 up to 2000kg of braked trailer towing ability. The entry level diesel with two-wheel drive and a manual gearbox is limited to 1,600kg braked trailers.
