Revised mildly in its first 33 years on the market, the Defender became the poster image for utilitarian SUVs in terms of design. Introduced as a boxy, no-nonsense vehicle, it soldiered on with minor changes into the 2010s, an era that saw most SUVs adopt sporty, rounder features. Alongside the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, the Defender remained the only SUV to sport such classic boxy proportions and features. Naturally, this heritage prompted Land Rover to design the 2020 Defender in a similar way. Mildly inspired by the DC100 concept from 2011, the new Defender doesn鈥檛 share much with other Land Rover and Range Rover vehicles. That鈥檚 not surprising given that it rides on a unique platform. Design-wise, it pays tribute to the original Defender. Up front, the massive, rectangular grille of the old Defender was replaced by a much thinner and modern opening, but the headlamps were designed to mimic those seen on the old SUV.

American Auto Manufacturers are having, have MORE to do with "legacy" costs (meaning health care, benefits, retirement pensions, etc,) of there Union Workers. Since most of the foreign manufacturers don't have unions protecting their employees, they don't have those "legacy costs" to worry about. BIG THREE are still the BIG THREE when it comes to sales. In fact FORD was the number one selling BRAND in 2006 !

In fact the only cars that fall into this category are the MINI and the Nissan Micra, which in total make up four percent of the UK market. Meaning 96 percent would go towards subsidising factories on foreign soil. In Germany sixty five percent of the vehicles bought in their Scrappage scheme are produced in German Factories. This is closely replicated in France, with sixty two percent of vehicles being produced in French factories. The Scrappage scheme would undoubtedly help the dealers in the UK. However, recently the discounts being offered by dealers has often exceeded 拢2000 and that obviously has not kick started the car market. If introduced would the dealers not just revert to the list price and knock off the two grand? If discounts of 拢7,500 off a Land Rover can't get someone to trade in their banger, it's doubtful if an extra 拢2000 will make much of a difference. Is Scrappage the solution? First we need to work out the exact problem. Is it car sales? Is it the environment? Is it polluting vehicles? Or is it Lord Mandelson introducing a populist policy to support an ailing government?

Putting a million miles under your tyres is easy, as long as you are kind to your car and most important of all, you own the right car. A few years back a traveling salesman, Peter Gilbert, was able to put 1,001,385 miles in his 1989 Saab 900. He then donated it to the Wisconsin Automotive Museum after Saab verified the mileage. All he did was regularly service the car, change the tyres every 45,000 miles and rebuild the gearbox at 200,000 miles. The Saab even survived eight head-on collisions with errant deers. Not surprisingly, Gilbert replace his faithful old Saab, with another one that had rather less than 1m miles on the clock. This got me thinking - which cars could you buy and rely on to be around when their odometers click onto 1,000,000? It took Gilbert 17 years to pile on those miles, so which cars could we be driving in 2031? If it came down to the survival of the fittest, then you can鈥檛 buy better than the utterly indestructible Landcruiser.

Although it looks a lot like its predecessor, it also includes a few fresh design cues. But more importantly, it comes with a couple of new engines and three different four-wheel drive systems. Land Rover鈥檚 next-generation 2020 Defender will ditch its body-in-frame configuration, the company said this month. 鈥淟and Rover鈥檚 new purpose-engineered D7x (for extreme) architecture is based on a lightweight aluminum monoque construction to create the stiffest body structure the brand has ever produced,鈥?Land Rover wrote in a Sept. A Sept. 10 news release said the Defender had torsional rigidity of 29 kiloNewtons per degree. 鈥淭he body of the new Defender is aluminum intensive. The structure appears to be more unibody than true monocoque. Brudnicki said he鈥檇 look into which designation would be more accurate, but we haven鈥檛 yet received an answer. 鈥淭his is our vision of a modern Defender,鈥?Land Rover Chief Design Officer Gerry McGovern said in a statement. 鈥淭he clean body side contrasts dramatically against the sheer verticality of its front and particularly its rear to create a reassuringly purposeful stance. The OEM in a Sept. 10 news release said no body-in-white panels from other Land Rovers carried over to the Defender.

The most economical Audi Q7 engine is the 3.0 TDI diesel which delivers 201bhp and delivers just below 40mpg. Due to the size of the car insurance and road tax bills are going to be high. Add the CO2 emission figure of 189g/km to 242g/km to these factors as well. The mighty Q7 has made such a big impression on the segment that even the Range Rover seems little. In the SUV class a mix of qualities such as interior space, off-road ability, an upright driving position and capability to be used as a luxury saloon. And daringly, the Q7 is aiming for the top of the market.

With four engine versions at its disposal at the same time, including a hybrid, the 2020 Defender is definitely versatile, but is it as capable as its predecessor? Well, the Wrangler also comes with two gasoline choices, starting with the iconic 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6. While it鈥檚 no match for the P400 hybrid, this engine is almost as powerful as the Defender P300, lacking only 12 horsepower. But the Range Rover SV Autobiography Dynamic misses out on the 鈥楻鈥?at the end of 鈥楽V鈥? possibly because it鈥檚 a big, luxury SUV with a great lump of supercharged V8 - as in, not a precise driving device. You鈥檇 certainly never describe it as a giant hot hatch, like you might a BMW X5M. It鈥檚 just a nice car with a nice engine.

This is the first image of the new Land Rover Defender鈥檚 interior, which was leaked on social media months before we鈥檙e supposed to see it. The image was posted online by Twitter user rcdesignsuk and it looks like the real deal, featuring a digital instrument display and a wide infotainment touchscreen. The four-spoke steering wheel features a Defender badge, while the aluminum pedals feature 鈥榮top鈥?and 鈥榞o鈥?to them. The dashboard appears to retain the utilitarian character of the original without looking crude, mixing durable plastic with materials like metal and leather. The automatic transmission features JLR鈥檚 widely used gear selector that鈥檚 mounted high on the dashboard. So far we鈥檝e seen images of heavily camouflaged Defender prototypes only, with Land Rover working on both a short-wheelbase 90 version and a long-wheelbase 110 version. Reports suggest that Land Rover is planning a whole range of bodystyles for the new Defender, including a pickup truck.

You can also choose from a curated range of veneers and finishes, which include a rugged rough-cut Walnut or Natural Smoked Dark Oak, both with open pore to give a more natural feel. Powder coating colors available include Dark Grey for the Defender X and Light Grey as standard on core models. Unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show to plenty of fanfare, this new 4脳4 Defender has certainly not disappointed. It鈥檚 now built upon a new D7x architecture designed to withstand the Extreme Event Test procedure 鈥?meaning it can tackle extreme terrain, including the ability to scale a 42-degree incline, ford deeper waters than ever (35.4鈥?, and more. It can also tow up to 8,201 and house up to 661 pounds on the roof (though that drops to 370-pounds when in-motion). This is possible thanks, in part, to loads of new technologies and features, including Configurable Terrain Response; a locking center differential; active rear and locking differential; the option for petrol, diesel, hybrid, and electric powertrains (up to 395hp); and more. The cabin has also seen some pretty major upgrades in the form of an automatically-updating, intuitive PIVI Pro infotainment center complete with a 10鈥?touchscreen display that鈥檚 compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. And, of course, it will be available in a larger 110 format with the 90 soon to follow.

I'Ve owned many Land Rovers over the years from Range Rover to the Discovery I Series. It took a while to get used to the smooth air ride of the LR3 after bouncing around in the Discovery for years. It kinda made me feel like the truck was more luxury than off road. I must say that I love the LR3 and am buying another but in HSE trim with all the bells and whistles. I have had no issues with my LR3 or my Range Rover Sport to date. The LR3 (I've found out) is more than capable of anything that I throw its way on or off road. Awesome 4x4, great handling with the correct tires, good navigation, great stereo and DVD - and most important - lots of cup holders! It's great all around as I can take it out to fine dine or to the beach and back roads. You need one to know what I'm talking about.
