Shortlist And Countdown To July 3
Off-road capabilities are not really important in this class but sharp looks and competitive equipment levels are both essential. The Peugeot 3008 returns again after winning last year, but with the Skoda Karoq, Mazda CX-5 and others snapping at its heels, the judges will have a tough decision on their hands. Comfort, practicality and equipment are key here, but styling also plays a big role. Large SUVs are getting further and further away from their hardcore 4x4 roots, meaning off-road ability is less of a priority than infotainment and innovative interior features. That said, a mix of capabilities both on the Tarmac and off it is desirable. The small premium SUV sector is a relatively new one, but it鈥檚 expanding quickly. Volvo appears to be on an incredible run of form recently, but the XC40 will have to trump the likes of the MINI Countryman, Jaguar E-Pace and Audi Q2 if it wants to emerge victorious. The mid-sized premium SUV shortlist is largely made up of the big brothers and sisters of the small premium SUV contenders. The exceptions being the Mercedes GLC and the Alfa Romeo Stelvio.
Fuel economy is on par with competitors, but less than a diesel people mover. It looks tall, but that can be said with other Japanese minivans, narrow and tall. Some bits denote luxury like the grille (for the 2002-2007 models) while big lights are necessary for the front and rear due to the vehicle's stature. The 2008-2012 units have their head and tail lights resemble the JDM model. The side profiles look clean and does not look out of place. Thanks to the tall nature, passengers get more space above. While the first two rows spell comfort for three, the third row is best for two people and the jump seats is best left for emergency purposes. With the column stalk for the automatic located behind the wheel (the manual has the stick placed forward against the seats), legroom is freed and access to the back is easy. The radio and climate controls (they are merged to one location in the late 2007 update, which gave way for a cubby hole) are angled upwards due to the fact the drivers seat is high. There is a screen for the rear occupants, but only plays VCD.
The seating position feels unusually high, which is great when off-roading, as it allows superior vision to spot any concealed roots or rocks. When on normal roads, however, it felt like we needed to drop the seat down an inch or so, but that just wasn't an option. Tall drivers might find it annoying. The LR2 infotainment system has a 7-inch touch screen on the console, using capacitive technology that promises improved scrolling on the main navigation screen (if so equipped). From here you can control the Meridian audio system and the optional navigation. A QWERTY keyboard permits phonebook searching. SiriusXM satellite radio incorporates such features as artist memory seek, learn/game memory seek, and instant replay. If you opt for an upper model, you will be granted a rearview camera that incorporates Hitch Assist to help with backing up if towing a boat or trailer, showing the exact location of the tow ball. Below the screen is a horde of buttons and dials. The font used for wording the buttons looks a little big, bland and boring, like something from a Kindergarten's Learn to Read book.
There is some wood trim that appears in the center console and on the doors, along with many exposed bolts to emphasize the utilitarian nature of the Defender. The shifter sits up on the center stack with the climate controls, which is important because the Defender is available with a front bench seat that does away with the center console. On the topic of seating, the Defender 110 is available with a third row of seats, though only with the front bucket-seat arrangement for a maximum occupancy of seven. The Defender 90 naturally has just two rows, but with the front bench can hold up to six people in close quarters. Of course hardcore Defender fans want to know about the mechanical bits and how capable the Defender is. And if they're satisfied with the Range Rover's capabilities, they should be happy with the new Defender, because it uses most of the same stuff as the flagship Land Rover. Under the hood is a standard turbocharged inline-four making 296 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque.
Workers in the Midlands fear further job losses amid rumours iconic British car maker Jaguar Land Rover could be bought by the French. The company, which employs 40,000 people in the UK, racked up losses of 拢3.4billion between October and December, according to leaked documents. The luxury car maker, which is owned by Indian firm Tata, is said to be in talks with Peugeot and Citroen owner Groupe PSA about a possible takeover. In January, JLR - which also makes the Range Rover - confirmed it would axe 4,500 jobs, with most coming from its UK workforce, on top of another 1,500 job cuts announced last year. The following month, JLR posted the biggest quarterly loss in Indian corporate history - amounting to 拢3.4billion in the final three months of 2018 - as sales plunged in China. Leaked information suggests a sale of struggling Jaguar Land Rover to French car group PSA could be imminent. Any deal with PSA would raise fears of cuts to production in the UK and further job losses, which would be a major blow to the UK's struggling car industry.
