The Td5 engine is often mistakenly attributed to BMW but the engine was derived from the Rover L-series passenger car engine and developed by Land Rover. ACE (Active Cornering Enhancement, an electronically controlled hydraulic anti-roll bar system) was fitted to some versions, which reduced cornering roll. When you do transport your friends (either tall or short), you still have enough room for all their stuff. With the rear seats up the back has 21.5 cubic feet of cargo space. Enough for camping, glamping (at Coachella of course) and runs to the mall. The latest Evoque takes all the great parts of the old version and makes it better with a slicker design and upgraded tech. Sadly some of it will never be used to its fullest potential (like the rest of the SUV), but it's good to know it's there if you ever need it. The Range Rover Sport made its first appearance in late 2004, in concept car guise as the Range Stormer. This was a low-slung, short wheelbase 3-door coupe that depicted a significant aberration in design brief for a Land Rover. The marque's first complete concept car sported split-folding gullwing doors, one-piece skeletal seats and 22 inch alloys. The Range Rover Sport was comparably of much more conservative design featuring five doors and a wheelbase hardly shorter than that of the Range Rover Vogue. The range-topping Sport is powered by a supercharged 4.2-litre all-aluminium Jaguar AJ-V8 engine producing 390 hp (290 kW) and 550 N路m (410 lb路ft). Next Land Rover Defender: Why the long wait? Land Rover showed us a concept of the new Defender as long ago as 2011, but the production version will only arrive in 2020. Why is the next iteration of an off-road icon taking so long to come to fruition? Imagine if Toyota stopped production of the current Fortuner, without a successor in sight, and then informed the market there was no certainty when a new Fortuner would arrive. It would be an unfathomable scenario, for a product of Fortuner鈥檚 success, to be discontinued without a successor. But that鈥檚 exactly what's happened with Land Rover鈥檚 iconic Defender. After 67 years of production the vehicle, which is more synonymous with adventure journeying than any other, ceased production. Born in a post-war Britain short on crucial engineering materials, Land Rover embraced aluminium construction decades before most other vehicle manufacturers even considered it. Despite abysmal quality issues each time Land Rover neared bankruptcy - which has been often - the company鈥檚 Defenders remain some of the most collectable vehicles around.

They do most of the work for Land Rover and BMW for point of purchase displays as well as other large companies. The speed sensitive steering system, adopted from Jaguar is standard on all models and there鈥檚 the option of active bi-xenon headlamps which act with the angle of the steering to aid vision. Active Cruise Control (ACC) with Forward Alert system incorporates an integrated front bumper radar which detects vehicles travelling ahead and adapts the vehicle鈥檚 speed to match. A facelift to the Range Rover Sport was exhibited at the New York Auto Show in April 2009. It featured a more aerodynamic front-end including new headlights, grille and bumper. Also new are revised rear lights and rear bumper. Interior revisions are more significant with a new fascia, steering wheel, door linings, seats, instruments and switchgear. The new model has more leather apparent and nearly 50 percent less dash bound buttons than the previous model. Three new engines have made their debut. These include an all-new direct injected, all-aluminium 5.0-litre petrol V8 engine in naturally aspirated and supercharged guises as seen in Jaguar鈥檚 latest range of high-performance vehicles.

So a single push is not enough. But back to my point of skipping ahead and returning later, I鈥檝e found that later on, the words fall into place. It may not be at the end of that specific writing session, or in a subsequent writing session, but eventually, the words fall into place. Be patient, and have faith in your brilliance as a writer. It will come together. It is also important to find a place and time that feeds your creativity. Early mornings and late nights work for me. Probably because my teens and pre-teen are resting at those hours, laying in wait, to resume their noisy and discordant existences with renewed levels of vigor. So I write when they sleep. Every now and then, I also like a change of scenery. A new environment may trigger new and fresh creative thoughts. For a change, I go to the local college library on weekend afternoons. It鈥檚 busy, yet quiet there, and I feed off the energy of the college kids, frantically working on their deadlines. Some people like coffee shops. I don鈥檛. I love coffee, but I don鈥檛 particularly care for coffee shop people.

The Swallow Sidecar Company moved into car manufacture, and switched its name to Jaguar after the Second World War. It produced premium saloons and sports cars, including the legendary XK120. In 1948, Range Rover started to develop a new all-terrain vehicle, inspired by the American Jeep. Rover Managing Director Spencer Wilks had a plan to revive the company's flagging sales in the post-war market. He tasked his brother Maurice - who was Rover chief designer at the time - to create a vehicle designed primarily for agricultural use which would help bring in much needed income until the luxury car market picked up again. Lightweight and rustproof, the Land Rover Series 1 was clad in aluminium alloy, due to the post-war steel shortage, and cost 拢450. It introduced 4x4 capabilities to road cars and was soon adopted by the military as well. In 1951 it was handed a Royal Warrant by King George V11, and over the generations many of the Royals been transported in the vehicles.

In terms of getting to market with an all-electric compact crossover-SUV with a reasonable range (over 200 miles, perhaps 300 or more), Ford will neither be the first, nor the last. GM comes close with the "CUV" Chevrolet Bolt EV, but in 2018 it is joined by Jaguar i-Pace, Hyundai Kona EV and Kia Niro EV. Audi straddles the 2018-2019 year in Europe and the U.S. 2019 by Buick, Mercedes, Volvo and Audi's second car in the segment, the Sportback. Ford will enter the market after those and a few more. Then, by the end of 2022, with Ford having six BEVs in the U.S. Mercedes will have 10 cars, Audi probably five, Volvo-Polestar also five, and the Volkswagen brand could have three or four by that time, 2022 -- in the U.S. Is this good or bad for Ford? If the government subsidizes EVs, incentivizes them otherwise (such as Norway), or outright mandates them (China, California and the other U.S. If you want to be in the car market, you have to produce a certain percentage of them as BEVs.

Other technical changes include the fitting of the more powerful brakes from the Range Rover Sport and thicker anti-roll bars to improve on-road handling. The electronic handling system have been updated - the Stability Control System now includes a programme that detects the onset of understeer and applies the brakes. The D4 retains its predecessor's fully independent air suspension with cross-linking when off-road and the twin-range transfer gearbox with an electronic infinitely-variable locking centre differential. As before a similar locking rear differential is available. The 2.7-litre TDV6 engine was available in Europe on the basic 2.7 GS passenger and 2010 Commercial ranges. Unlike the D3 base model this is equipped with air suspension and the Terrain Response system. The automatic transmission is an option on this model. The 3.0-litre Gen III model (only with automatic transmission) is also available in the GS trim level. The Discovery 4 also features a redesigned interior (again in keeping with the new styles introduced elsewhere in the LR range for 2010). The instrument cluster is updated with the speedometer and tachometer analogue gauges being redesigned to improve clarity. The analogue temperature and fuel gauges of the previous model, and the electronic information display are replaced by a single TFT screen capable of displaying information in a variety of modes and formats. The interior also has a new centre console, which includes redesigned and simplified switches and controls. The Discover also has a new seat design and a wider range of available interior materials-some (such as the highly polished 'Piano Black' and wood veneer) are materials previously only seen in Range Rover models. The stated aim of the interior redesign was to lift the vehicle upmarket, especially the higher-spec models which are now aimed at the luxury and executive markets. In a January 2011 comparison test by Car and Driver, the Land Rover LR4 came in fourth place out of five cars behind the Audi Q7,BMW X5, and Acura MDX.

It鈥檚 not as fast and agile as its rival, but it鈥檚 still searingly quick and composed, plus it鈥檚 refined and peerless off-road. It鈥檚 the ultimate luxury all-rounder. The Bentayga represents a strong first SUV effort for Bentley. Explosive performance, agile handling and strong refinement are major strengths, as is the ability to tailor the car鈥檚 looks and interior. It just doesn't have the Range Rover鈥檚 sense of occasion or kit count. The Bentayga is hugely polished, but it drives too much like a top-spec Audi Q7, which costs 拢90,000 less.

For the diesel engine, a six-speed manual transmission was standard. As an option, and as standard on the V8 engine, a six-speed automatic transmission was available. Both came with a two-speed transfer box and permanent four-wheel-drive. A computer controlled progressively locking central differential ensured traction was retained in tough conditions. A similar differential was available on the rear axle to aid traction. The Discovery 3 was fitted with multiple electronic traction control systems. Hill Descent Control (HDC) prevented vehicle 'runaways' when descending steep gradients and 4-wheel Electronic Traction Control (4ETC) prevented wheel spin in low-traction conditions. An on-road system, Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) prevented skidding when steering and braking at speed. The vehicle also featured the 'Terrain Response' system. Previously, off-road driving had been a skill that many drivers found daunting. A wide-ranging knowledge of the vehicle was needed to be able to select the correct gear, transfer ratio, various differential systems and master various techniques required for tackling steep hills, deep water and other tough terrain.

So this was the year for the adventure. Northumberland is a wonderful and mostly under populated county. After a number of castles, one of the classic places to visit is Holy Island so we did, and here is some evidence. We did not stop there other than for the picture and that was when there was no traffic coming onto the island so we were not in anyone's way while we did. Discovery looks next to Katy. After some days at the coast we headed inland and our next stop was Kielder firest where the only rain we had on the trip interrupted our planning a little. They had tried to be nice and gone onto the verge to let someone past which is not a good idea in a 3 ton 2 wheel drive vehicle with road tyres. The people trying to push it were getting nowhere fast and it was just digging in so they were really pleased to see us arrive with Katy and a suitably strong piece of rope. The owner was really happy to have been rescued by the UN! After that we made our way down to Hadrian's Wall where some almost unbroken sunshine made up for the poor weather we had just had.

It took the best part of two days to sort the multiple and overlapping wiring problems on my old Land Rover project car. Of course, after 26 years in the USA, I'd more or less forgotten about the "Prince of Darkness," Lucas Electrical systems, once touted as the best reason ever NOT to buy a British car. How could I ever forget? All those Minis and Maxis and other British Leyland cars I owned? I think I had two or three different Minis, all of which would blow fuses and melt wires. The Lucas company managed to get a UK monopoly on automotive electrical systems in the 1930s, and held it right through to Thatcherism and the eventual demise of British Leyland. After all, why use one wire when five will do? In the end most problems on this particular Lucas wiring system were solved by sistering in new wires all the way from the fuse box to switch to whatever it was, light, horn, wipers, windshield washer, etc &c. Nothing worked at first try. The rear wiring loom literally fell off in my hand, eaten through by rodents.

I鈥檇 rather up my odds and change the fluid every now and then. Note that most high-end cars use special fluids and there are few if any generic substitutes. What about brake fluid? The reason for changing brake fluid is that it absorbs moisture, which rusts brake components from the inside. For many years, European carmakers suggested semi-annual fluid changes, and domestic carmakers didn鈥檛 suggest any brake fluid service at all. The result was frozen calipers on domestics and very little trouble on imports with fluid service. There have not been any changes in brake fluid technology and brake components are still made from similar materials as 20 years ago. Therefore, I feel safe suggesting we adhere to the traditional once-every-two-years fluid flush cycle. The exception to that is cars that get run on the track, where the fluid gets hot, because the heat cycling can accelerate moisture absorption. For cars that run on the track I recommend annual flushes. I think the fluid recommendations above represent a sensible balance that favors extending the life of the vehicle鈥檚 mechanical systems at minimal added maintenance cost. They are based on my study of the cars and lubricants, and my 20-some years of experience as a service manager here at J E Robison Service in Springfield. However, the final decision is up to you as the motorist.
