It might be a well known "mum's taxi" but have you considered the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado as your expedition vehicle? We all know about the Land Cruiser Troopy, the popular 80-Series but what about the 120-Series as a vehicle option for overland travel? Stacked within the ranks of the Land Cruiser naming standards, the 120-Series is typically known as the Prado (or in the UK, the LC3). The 120-Series entered the vehicle market in 2003 replacing the six year old 90-Series (known as the Colorado in the UK). The Land Cruiser brand personifies reliability, durability and the Toyota 'sameness'. The brand attracts loyal follows who actively defend their vehicle decision especially against Land Rover fanatics. To keep the naming standards simple, I will refer to the 120-Series as the 'Prado'. Admittedly majority of Prado's are used as "mum's taxi" due to the 8-seat layout. Remove the Prado from an urban environment and you have a comfortable overland tourer offering ample interior space with good access, and a comfort level that will ensure the roughest drives are handled with ease.

After a couple of false starts, I left home around 0330 on a Sunday morning in July. The drive was good although loud, I wore earplugs, as I went thru the SF bay area and across California's Central Valley and headed into the Sierra Nevada Mtns. The 109 began to heat up and one of the things I needed to sort out was the electric fan, I wasn't sure it was coming on. Up and down I went along with the temp gauge, at one point it was around 230掳F and I knew the fan was not coming on. So I pulled over and lifted the bonnet, pulled off the rubber cover and started adjusting the set screw(counter clockwise) until the fan came on. Then it shut quickly off so I adjusted it more, and again, and again until it stayed on a bit. I think that now it is coming on around 220 and off around 190. I can tell when it kicks on/off when the voltmeter needle moves.

I purchased the premium package option with the Vista Sun Roof. I live in a cold climate but still love leaving the shade open and having all the additional light throughout the cabin. I have also been impressed with the engine performance. The engine is accompanied by a strong 6-speed automatic which has very good shift points and makes the vehicle fun to drive. It has been well received by others in my town where they have even flagged me down to take a look at the vehicle. Often many think that it is a Lexus or BMW. The interior fit and finish is top notch for Lincoln. The seats have to be the most comfortable I have ever owned in a vehicle. The heated seats are quick to heat and the cooled seats are a must for warmer climates. In my comparison shopping, the Nissan Murano and the Toyota Highlander/RAV4 couldn鈥檛 provide the look and ride that I fell in love with in the MKX. I also liked the Ford Edge but opted for the higher line MKX. Ford Motor Company has hit a homerun with this vehicle. You have to get used to being in a lower gear, which allows the engine to be in the right rev range to deliver its power. Performance is fine, though we reckon the 2.0-litre diesel engine is a much better fit for this large car. Having to rev the engine this hard just doesn鈥檛 feel quite right - and takes away from the relaxed feel. That feeling is down to the plush suspension, which smoothes out lumps and bumps very well, just as it did in the previous Superb. There鈥檚 very little vibration over badly surfaced roads, and even big potholes don鈥檛 upset the body control. Comfortable leather seats are standard on this SE L model, too. It鈥檚 no driver鈥檚 car, but the Superb is still enjoyable to drive thanks to its tight body control. It means you can drive as quickly as you like on country roads without fear of a nasty pothole - and the accurate steering means it鈥檚 easy to place on the road, too. As with the previous model, rear legroom is excellent. Even the tallest passengers won鈥檛 complain about space, and this doesn鈥檛 compromise the boot either, which is a cavernous 625 litres. The Estate version offers even more practicality, but even the hatch has more space than nearly any other car at this price. Its low cost also means it鈥檚 excellent value: SE L models get sat-nav, smartphone connectivity, blind spot detection and Matrix LED headlights as standard, so you鈥檙e not left wanting for kit.
