This 1964 Land Rover 109 Regular came from the factory with single-circuit, non-power drum brakes. This system is notorious for retaining air, resulting in poor brake action. When these vehicles were new, the brakes worked fine. But over the years it seems people have assumed that the system never worked right. Not the whole truth, but in fact, it has some design flaws that make bleeding the system very difficult. I have spoken to longtime Land Rover mechanics who remember that even when new, the system was problematic for professionals to bleed. You will see why in a moment. The following details an upgrade to the later model power assisted brake system, which will solve all the problems inherent in the original setup. To accomplish this conversion, you'll need new brake pipes, new clutch and brake master cylinders, a brake servo, a late Series IIA or Series III pedal and tower, new brake pedal return springs, and some vacuum fittings.

The plugs were a nice grey, which was good to see. If the rings were shot, they'd be a nasty black. I expect this was enough to keep the motor more or less inhibited against corrosion and decay, although we'll find out how well he did, once we get the thing running a little better. I have some solid reason for hope now, with the test score. A new engine should have scored 145 on all cylinders, but 100 to 110 and even all around is not too bad for a stone cold test on such an old block. There was clean coolant in the radiator, and decent oil in the sump, with good oil pressure, indicating good main bearings. All in all, pretty good news. The compression results are consistent with the mileage on the clock, which is 83,000; in other words, this is most likely an original untouched engine with 83,000 miles, old but not completely clapped out yet.

The Explore will continue working at -30 degrees, and up to 65 degrees C. Its touchscreen works when wet, too, which might be the most useful feature of all, day-to-day. That is almost twice as thick as an iPhone. At 232g, it鈥檚 heavy, too. This will test the brand loyalty of those who simply like Land Rover. There are none of the usual trappings of high-end phones either: no fingerprint scanner or face unlocking, and the screen is the old 16:9 kind rather than the 18:9 shape used by almost every other new phone. It鈥檚 sharp and colourful, but there鈥檚 a lot of phone that extends beyond the display itself. The Explore is also less deep down the rugged rabbit hole than the CAT S61, made by the same company. That phone has a thermal-imaging camera and a laser distance measure, but is also 拢200 more expensive. This phone is for those left scratching their heads about why you鈥檇 need these extras.

It's completely understandable if you are dreaming to own a Range Rover because it is a top-notch creation. However, with its staggeringly high price, only a lucky few are given the chance to own it. If you think you don't have the budget to spare for it, don't lose hope because second hand cars are a great alternative. I won't go into part numbers here, since various suppliers have their own part numbering systems. You can do some research and source all this stuff easily. DISCLAIMER:This conversion requires a basic understanding of mechanical principles and some skill to perform properly. Your brakes are a vital safety system in your vehicle and you should not attempt the following operations without careful planning and postconversion testing. YOU are responsible for the safe operation of your Land Rover. If you have any doubts, go to a professional. In the above shot you can see the angle of the bulkhead where the pedal boxes mount up. The compression barrel master cylinder in the single circuit system sits at the same angle, keeping air bubbles trapped in the rear of the bore. The output port is lower than the rear of the bore. The other problem is that the 109 has two wheel cylinders on each front wheel, but the bleed screw is at the bottom, so the top cylinder can trap air, too. Here is the early style pedal box.

Needless to say, the Discovery has always been a 4脳4 exclusive, and nothing is going to change on that part anytime soon. 2,000 more than the base petrol one but manages to return up to 23 miles to the gallon combined. Although not a particularly high figure (especially for a diesel), that鈥檚 still a lot better than what the supercharged gasoline burner returns at 18 mpg combined. The linchpin of the Land Rover lineup has traditionally been one of the best SUVs money can buy but there鈥檚 a genuine concern for the aging nameplate now that we鈥檙e on the verge of 21st century鈥檚 third decade. The British automaker鈥檚 flagship model hasn鈥檛 been truly updated since 2012 which is unacceptable for a modern-day crossover/SUV. With the next generation of luxury off-road SUV already confirmed for 2021, maybe it鈥檚 best to sit out on the 2020 Range Rover. Especially considering its prices won鈥檛 budge.

The ride quality on the 20-inch wheels of our test car - wheel sizes range from 17 to 21 inches - is excellent. In comfort mode, it offers a similar floaty feeling to the air-suspended larger members of the Range Rover family. The trade off is that it isn鈥檛 as fun to drive as a BMW X1, but grip is strong and the steering precise enough. The optional adaptive dampers seem redundant though: the differences in ride and handling between comfort and sport modes are so subtle that there鈥檚 barely any point changing them. Under the bonnet, the Evoque gets the same range of 鈥業ngenium鈥?four cylinder engines used by the last car. This time, however, all but the most basic 148bhp diesel get a 48-volt mild hybrid system. A plug-in hybrid model will join the range roughly a year from now. The most popular model is expected to be the 178bhp diesel driven here. In the last Evoque, its rather gruff nature meant it lagged behind the equivalent BMW and Audi units.

By this juncture, wise owners of vintage Rolls-Royce and Bentley have learned to take fluid leaks in stride. It鈥檚 part of the charm, to keep the garage floor lubricated. Folks who could not handle the leaks bought Toyotas instead. But we assume the leaks won鈥檛 strand or disable our cars. We particularly assume the leaks won鈥檛 cause us to crash. That is what makes this particular story so distressing. The 1997 car shown here arrived at our shop with some common complaints. The brakes were soft, and pulled to one side and the low fluid warning was coming o. It seemed routine - add some fluid and bleed the nitrogen bubbles out of the system. We encourage people to do this service every year, in the spring, because nitrogen gas leaks into the fluid slowly as the accumulators age. But that didn鈥檛 solve this car鈥檚 problem. Bleeding did fix the pull, but only temporarily. A closer look revealed the problem.

April 26, 2007: Turning 93,017 miles at over 70 MPH, heading for Northern California and the annual Mendo Recce weekend. In 1994 a few Northern California Land Rover nuts took a reconnoitering trip to the Mendocino National Forest in preparation for a group trailing weekend. To keep everyone informed, Ben Smith created a list server and called it "Mendo Recce". Thirteen years later, the Mendo Recce list is still going strong, and so is the annual Mendo Weekend Rallye. What follows are some pics of the weekend. Some of the pictures are crap, because my camera is crap. One approach to the National Forest takes you through an amazing hidden valley, past ranches and across cattle guards, then past a reservoir and finally to a number of trailheads. Below: taking a quick break at a cross roads. Above: Travis charges up the first trail in his '71 Series IIA. Travis was a little nervous about his rear parabolics, which are two-leafers, and got tippy last year.

The problems begin with the lies made to gain admission. People that had identifications to board a plane claim upon arrival to lack papers and then assume the fictitious nationality of an 鈥渦nsafe country鈥?to demand asylum as a right. The lacking IDs hinder repatriation. With disturbing frequency, the alleged victim becomes a warden of the host state that houses and feeds him and allots pocket money. Illegal entry is often followed by a life of crime. Apprehended culprits enjoy virtual immunity as they cannot be expelled or fined. After perfunctory warnings, to avoid 鈥渞acism鈥? they are soon released. If incarcerated, the time served is used to demand residency status as the claimant got 鈥渦sed鈥?to his milieu. Except for the Left and the PC privileged, people know this. The rise of parties of outrage and the isolation of the political class, as elections in France and Austria show, is a consequence.

British automotive and aeronautical engineer, Maurice Wilks, is credited with building the first Land Rover, a model based on the chassis of the American Jeep vehicles used during World War II. Wilks had been using an Army-surplus Jeep on his farm in North Wales, finding it an ideal vehicle for getting around. Yet, Wilks wasn鈥檛 satisfied as he wanted a vehicle that blended the best attributes of a light truck with a tractor, so he used a Jeep chassis to develop what became the Land Rover鈥檚 first vehicle. That initial model, known as the Series I, incorporated power take-off drives as found in tractors and introduced styling that was more prosaic than pleasing. Growth was gradual for Land Rover as the Rover Company first lengthened the size of the Series I and also introduced the Tickford Station Wagon with its wooden-frame bodywork. Other models, including a pickup truck, were also built.

The new BMW features giant kidney grille, big wheels, geometric taillights, and a bit more ground clearance. Smaller in size and accordingly not as roomy as its big brother the BMW X3, the entry-level utility vehicle's dimensions are close to Land Rover's LR2. Despite the vehicle's compact dimensions, additional room in the rear of X1 is achieved with the center console that runs back into the rider's seating area. The X1 is also lighter and faster, than the X3. Delivering 40 percent of the engine torque to the front axle and 60 percent to the rear, the AWD system notably reduces over- and understeer. BMW's sleek crossover has made an impression since its debut. Improved four-wheel-drive has elevated the senses of drivers everywhere, allowing them the corrective safety measures normally absent on such models. Improved interior components have been implemented to rave reviews. The right touch of power and off-road capability allows the fun to begin as soon as you turn the key. Already one of BMW's most popular machines of Europe in recent years, the X1 is on a very short list of the most influential crossover SUVs to be released in the United States of America. BMW X1 Accessories and parts are the difference between driving a stock vehicle and your very own, personalized machine. CARiD is here to help connect you with the kind of BMW X1 Accessories and parts that do the trick. Our inventory is based around providing all of the highest quality options you need at prices that are unbeatable. Interior, exterior, style, or protection - it doesn't make a difference.
