The 48-volt lithium-ion battery stores the energy captured from the braking system. With both units engaged, the P400 MHEV generates a solid 395 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque. This model is also quicker than the base Defender and hits 60 mph in only 5.8 seconds. This engine mates to the same eight-speed gearbox and twin-speed transfer case. Needless to say, the 2020 Defender is the first of its kind to feature a hybrid drivetrain. It鈥檚 also the first since the late 1990s to feature a gasoline engine. For many years, the previous Defender was sold with diesel mills only. The final iteration, offered from 2012 to 2016, features a 2.2-liter Duratorq oil burner rated at 122 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of twist. But this doesn鈥檛 mean that the 2020 Defender doesn鈥檛 have diesel power. Land Rover actually offers two oil burners, but they鈥檙e not available in the United States. You鈥檒l have access to them in Europe, though.

Additional, this whole experience was ridiculous considering they supposedly left a voicemail the night before the appointment. I assumed it was just a confirmation of the appointment. You would think they would be smart enough to send you an email, text or letter and tell you that they couldn't support you.

One tester said he鈥檇 simply rather have an SDV8. You may very well feel the same, but if you鈥檙e a paying customer, that鈥檚 your prerogative. In the X5 M and XD3, you鈥檒l find very different blends of those various qualities but perhaps not the cocktail of proportions you鈥檙e expecting. The Range Rover is the only car here with the telling advantage of off-road capability delivered by height-adjustable air suspension, for example, but the X5鈥檚 air-sprung rear end is self-levelling, making it a better tow car than you might think. The SVR鈥檚 boot is big, but the M car鈥檚 is notably bigger, and it鈥檚 a more accommodating passenger car on account of its genuine three-seat rear bench. The X5 is also the fastest and most sporting car here; that much, we鈥檒l get to. And although the Range Rover Sport may continue to be flavour of the month, the X5 M has a returning customer base and more performance brand equity.
