23: What Kind Of Automobile Would You Prefer, But Can't Afford New?

My second one, the Series IIa, came under this heading. Good performance on the M-way even, but thirsty (about 25mpg at best), but she was great over the moors! Then the third one, originally bought because of the Perkins diesel engine advertised. Good performance, but age got the better of it, and I was driving it too fast. It wasn't really meant to go at more than about 55mph, and ended up belching out black smoke! The workshop I took it to insisted in putting in a more modern Tdi300, 2.5 litre meant for a 110. Good performance again, about 30-35mpg (that's good for a 'Landie'. Then there's the 1995 engine I've got in my 'Disco', even better! I'd say I get upwards of 35mpg from this one. If you had a V6 or V8, you'd need a bottomless wallet. Plenty of torque, but downright THIRSTY. I know some people who have older 'Landies' whose vehicles only do UP TO 20mpg! Not as good in performance any more, either, but it depends on the quality of maintenance.

The original Defender was always designed to be functional first, but the new model has added some class and refinement, without compromising on utility. The front and rear overhangs are as pared back as ever, translating to excellent approach and departure angles, and the side-hinged tailgate has been retained for ease-of-access. Naturally, the spare wheel has to be mounted on the back. It just wouldn鈥檛 be a Defender without it. There鈥檚 plenty of flat metal on the bonnet, too, just the way we like it. Form follows function, and that D7x construction was created with overlanding in mind. Perhaps the part of the old Defender most direly in need of a 21st century upgrade, the new Defender鈥檚 interior is on par with modern Land Rover standards. Having said that, it retains some of the rugged appeal of its forebears. The new Pivi Pro infotainment system promises to be more user-friendly than ever, adding touch-screen sophistication and a full suite of technological aids and media options. Software updates now happen over the air, ensuring the system always performs flawlessly.

The Evoque's ride is firm, and road imperfections make themselves readily known to all occupants. Encounter a twisty road and the Evoque can hold its own, but those looking for something that will more closely emulate a sports car in such a scenario should look elsewhere. Its wild styling may make the Evoque stand out in traffic, but its fuel-economy estimates certainly don't call any attention to the vehicle鈥攖hey are only average. Plus, in the real world, its fuel-efficiency claims are difficult to emulate. Likes: Modern design, crisp-looking infotainment display, nearly flat load floor with rear seats stowed. Dislikes: Cramped back-seat space, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto not standard, convertible model offers very little cargo room. Living up to the Range Rover name isn't easy, but the Evoque distills the lap-of-luxury cabin of its much larger namesake and adds its own spin with a contemporary design. The Evoque's standard infotainment offerings will assuage only casual users; high-tech drivers are encouraged to upgrade to the optional InControl Touch Pro, which adds a 10.2-inch display.
