A Great Farm Diary
The Shack ground crews had a mystique all of their own, a kind of string-and-baling wire approach to engineering. Some of the legends of Shackleton maintenance still circulate, like the fact that each Rolls-Royce Griffon engine had a 50 gallon supplementary engine oil tank that had to be topped off after each flight due to oil consumption. What a monster that engine was! An in-line 12 cylinder. I took the course to work on the engine, although I was never posted to a Shack squadron. And, of course the song. What has this to do with Maine farming? Well, according to rural legend in these parts, the official Maine state bird is the blackfly. Whose season is upon us. What price for a Stairmaster now, you old geek? There's a Maine tax that is meted out in pure blood! Obviously I have a little less to occupy my mind now that the semester is over and the summer begun. Old time doctors used to believe in bleeding the sick to reduce the amount of blood.
The 2015 Honda Odyssey is one of the most lauded minivans on the market, but it also happens to be one of the more expensive seven-to-eight passenger options in its class. The 2015 Toyota Sienna is another popular minivan choice, and one that provides a varied spectrum of equipment depending on how much money you are willing to spend tricking out your daily driver. The Toyota Sienna SE is motivated by a 3.5-liter V-6 that delivers 266 horsepower, and fuel mileage for this motor is listed at 18-mpg around town and 25-mpg on the highway. The Sienna is notable for being the only minivan to offer the option of all-wheel drive, a choice that adds not just extra traction to the equation but also 18-inch wheels in place of the stock 17-inch units. The 2015 Dodge Grand Caravan is usually marketed as a value-focused model, and indeed, its entry-level pricing speaks to the bargain-hunting driver that Dodge is seeking with the vehicle. The best minivan for the money, however, is actually to be found near the middle of the Dodge Grand Caravan's trim ladder: the SXT.
You could technically call the 2008 Land Rover LR2 a crossover, as it carries its SUV-like body on a smooth-riding independent suspension. But the LR2 comes with Land Rover's Terrain Response System and some pretty good off-road stats, such as 8.3 inches of ground clearance and the ability to wade through 19.7 inches of water. We were also pleased to see that Land Rover seriously upgraded its cabin electronics for the LR2 over what we've seen in other Land Rover models. The LR2 shows many of the design cues of its bigger brothers. The roof of the cargo area lifts a little, similar to the LR3. Engine vents in the front fenders mimic that of the Range Rover. And the grille has a similar crosshatched metal look as the Range Rover's. The LR2 shows off its Land Rover make well, even if you can see the top of the car while standing next to it.
I was expecting them to go 鈥渕ainstream鈥?if you will and make it a faux off-roader that was better suited for trips to Whole Foods. But I am very impressed with what I鈥檓 seeing. It looks like the most legit off-roader Land Rover has made in a long time and proves that they are still capable of mastering what put them on the map decades ago. It looks modern enough to be a comfortable and practical daily that can literally take you anywhere鈥?which I guess is like every other Land Rover but without all the pretentiousness. I love it and they deserve every sale they get. And that鈥檚 a wrap on your respective Hoons鈥?opinions on the 2020 Land Rover Defender. We鈥檝e covered it a bunch already, like here and here, so now that you鈥檝e had time to digest it all: what are your thoughts? Sound off in the comments.
