A Great Farm Diary
I heartily dislike working on cars when it's cold outside. Metal tools are too cold to touch and your fingers lose their feeling. I knew I'd have to replace all the rear brake lines, which would take at least a half a day. If I was going to spend that long underneath a car in the middle of winter, I at least wanted the outside temperature to be above freezing. Yesterday, off work for Spring Break, and with the daytime temperatures now in the upper 30s and low 40s, there was no excuse. I cleared the tractor and some other gubbins out of the shop, pulled the Ford in, and took a set of tin snips to the brake lines to see how much needed to be cut away. Each of these pieces is a stretch of brake line that was almost completely rusted through. Although there was only one actual leak, there would have been others later. All the corner bends were particularly rotten.
When I first got the text message from Wizzy telling me i had 48hrs to get an account of my holiday ready for her blog I felt a little nervous to say the least! Not being one for writting as i can hardly spell I thought "Oh God", apologies to all the religous readers of this missive! I thought I can talk about something (until the cows come home so Andy informs me) but not write! But knowing I would not be let off the hook- here goes! We had a good journey, delivering 'Granny Hamilton' to her son Martin. Don`t be fooled by the title Granny, yes a grandmother but by no means a doddery old lady! Grace is very capable and resouceful, infact I think she was safely delivering us to Africa! We very much enjoyed her company and look forward to seeing her soon. Martin and Tiddy got us back to their place at Thurua - a truly beautifull house and farm. They have acheived loads in the seven years they have been their and we really enjoyed our time with them, swimming in their pool, eating lunch and drinking beer!
After the success of Mars orbiter rover 'Curiosity', NASA would send another rover to the red planet by 2020 to explore "biosignatures" on Mars, a top scientist of the American space agency said here today. Lead Scientist of NASA's MARS Exploration Programme Michael Meyer told PTI here. Asked what would happen to Curiosity, he said, "Curiosity will keep going. In fact, this month, the rover is celebrating its 10th anniversary. It is still going. It is still doing good science. By 2020, Curiosity will also be there". On India's maiden Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) launched by Indian space agency ISRO, Meyer said it would be "fantastic" for science and for India. Launched from Satish Dhawan Space Centre of Sriharikota on December 4, MOM has escaped the Earth's sphere of influence and is now on course to reach Mars after a journey of about 300 days. The Rs 450-crore project would provide the scientific community better opportunities in planetary research. Earlier, answering questions from students of the Indian Institute of Technology at its annual conference 'Shaastra' here, the American scientist said finance was one of the reasons for National Aeronautics Space Agency (NASA) not exploring much on the Moon. Asked if there was a possibility of sending more rovers in one mission, he said it comes with a risk. Shouting up to the heavens and twirling in the dust, the shaman seemed energized by my wish for a few minutes then suddenly staggered to a stool. He sat down. It was a done deal. After I came home from Africa, I wrote a children's book about my African adventures. It took me a long time to perfect the style of writing I wanted to use, to select pictures, and to create a layout. I went to a New York writer's conference and took a copy of the manuscript with me.
