A Great Farm Diary
Them Liverpool judies have got us in tow. This spring strain is the punishment meted out for all those middle aged men with winter office jobs whose summer is spent doing more outdoor pursuits. It takes a few weeks to lick the old muscles back into shape. And every year after 40 it gets harder and harder to do so. But we'll get there. Six cords of firewood and a 80 by 80 foot garden patch is usually enough exercise to lose about 10 or 15 pounds and tighten everything up a good deal. And I feel better already, while the area I'm logging is already more pleasant to walk through, having also been cleared of stumps and roots and seeded to clover and perrenial ryegrass. My green gym philosophy. Man is not designed to occupy a desk all day, every day. And smother the bastard in oil! No, what is most remarkable is how beloved the Shackletons were.

It is on road that the Evoque is most impressive. Most immediately apparent is the directness of the steering, which is well-weighted, with decent feel and a surprising sharpness which highlights how agile and planted the car is. Even in town, it makes you forget you are driving something which could be called an SUV. The ride, with standard suspension, is impressive too, although alloy-wheel options and the impressive MagneRide damping system give more comfort or sportiness as desired. Once you鈥檝e finished cruising sedately and glancing at your reflection in shop windows, the temptation to explore its abilities on a quiet road will be irresistible. The promise shown at low speeds is fully realised here too. The Evoque corners with zeal, shrugs off its kerb weight and attacks the road like an overgrown hot hatch. That it can do this without feeling out of its depth in mud or too harsh on broken streets is testament to its breadth of ability. Some people won鈥檛 like the looks and others will dismiss it as another soft-roader for those who don鈥檛 need it. But viewed as a car in its own right, the Evoque is a mightily impressive piece of engineering and design. It is highly desirable, very capable and even decent value. If you鈥檙e not a fan already, maybe the sight of hundreds of them on the road in coming months will change your mind.
Hyundai now has its own six-speed automatic transmissions in its small, medium and large FWD cars. Hyundai is also only one of four global car manufacturers building their own unique six-speed automatic transmissions. The all-new six-speed automatic is 11 pounds lighter than Hyundai's global five-speed and 17 pounds lighter than the five-speed automatic found in Honda Civic. It is considerably simpler, having 62 fewer parts, which is a key to increased durability, lighter weight and lower cost. It also features a super flat torque converter that shortens the unit's overall length by 0.43 inches, while being 2.6 pounds lighter. This transmission mated to the 1.8-liter Nu engine helps Elantra deliver improved fuel efficiency - 11 percent more than its closest competitors and a four percent gain in fuel economy. The 2011 Elantra's six-speed manual transmission is also all-new and provides crisp shifts and further optimizes engine performance. These crisp shifts are courtesy of triple-cone synchronizers for first and second gears, double-cone for third gear and single-cone for fourth, fifth and sixth gears. The all-new Elantra rides on a 106.3-inch wheelbase, just two-inches longer than the previous generation.
It was Independence Day weekend in 1977, My wife and I were on our way to the Black Rock Desert to meet up with Scotty Howatt's annual desert get together. We were heading North on Nevada Hwy 447 just north of Nixon where you come around a bend and there you can see down to Pyramid Lake. At this point one can see a dirt double track heading down to the lakeside. We decided to go down and take a look. It was a couple of hot miles down the dusty track to the lake where we could park the 88 and walk to the waters edge. We opened the vents in the bulkhead and closed the windows and walked down towards the cool, cool water. After a few minutes we were swarmed by mosquitoes and ran back to the 88 in full retreat! We ran around to throw off the buggers and jumped inside.
