Recognizing the many sub-genres that have developed with premium sport utility vehicles, Land Rover has crafted a new product under the Range Rover name. Presenting the brand with some newfound performance for 2006, the Range Rover Sport provides 300 horsepower with an HSE model or 390 horsepower with a Supercharged variant. While the Range Rover Sport shares many styling attributes with the Range Rover, the vehicle's structure is adapted from the LR3 chassis. Compared to the Land Rover flagship, the 2006 Range Rover Sport is 9.2 inches shorter in overall length. The familiar conventional Range Rover receives new propulsion for 2006. A Jaguar-derived 4.4-liter V-8 now moves the HSE model while the supercharged 4.2-liter V-8 is also available. The Land Rover Freelander (a compact premium sport utility vehicle that has previously been offered as a four-door and three-door with removable roof panels) has been dropped for the 2006 model year. Filling the void left in the entry-level premium category is a new V-6 powered Land Rover LR3.
