Famous Swedish Brand Names
This article offers some general background information on some well-known Swedish brand names, although some of them may not be commonly recognised as originally Swedish. Sweden is quite unusual in that, for the size of the country, it has a relatively large number of world-class companies. Until recently, these were largely Swedish owned, and several still are, but some are now owned, wholly or partly, by non-Swedish groups but are still seen as Swedish. However, most of these companies are not familiar to the majority of people because they sell to other industries and not to the general public. However, there are also some industrial names that are recognizable to the public at large. Volvo' means 'I roll' in Latin, and its familiar logo is based on the symbol for iron to illustrate the company's early links with the Swedish steel industry. The name is an acronym formed from the initials of Svenska Aeroplan AktieBolag (Swedish Aircraft Company) and the company was formed to develop a Swedish domestic military aviation industry. The SAAB Group now focuses on aviation, weapons systems, electronics and other systems and represents the major part of the Swedish defence industry. Scania was formed in 1891 and since then has delivered more than 1,000,000 vehicles. It merged with SAAB in 1969, but was spun off as a separate company in 1995 when SAAB ceased making both cars and trucks. The company is the world's third largest manufacturer of both heavy trucks and buses and, like Volvo, heavy vehicles carrying its logo are a common sight on British roads. At the time of writing, the German MAN Group is attempting to take over or merge with Scania, which would create a truck and bus group larger than Volvo and second in the world. Volksvagen, which is the largest single shareholder in both groups, has blocked a hostile bid, but is believed to favour a negotiated merger.
Jaguar confirmed today that it will build a new range of electrified vehicles at its Castle Bromwich plant in the UK, with the next-generation all-electric Jaguar XJ set to be the first new EV in the group. Jaguar Land Rover made the announcement on the same day the last current-generation Jaguar XJ rolled off the production line. The electric XJ will be developed by the same team responsible for the Jaguar I-Pace, JLR said. Jaguar鈥檚 Castle Bromwich plant will be converted into the 鈥淯K鈥檚 first premium electrified vehicle plant,鈥?with the ability to support the carmaker鈥檚 new electric-capable Modular Longitudinal Architecture platform. A previous report said an electric Range Rover could be made on the same new platform, but for now, JLR has only confirmed an electric XJ. The future of mobility is electric and, as a visionary British company, we are committed to making our next generation of zero-emission vehicles in the UK. We are co-locating our electric vehicle manufacture, Electronic Drive Units and battery assembly to create a powerhouse of electrification in the Midlands. The announcement also eases concerns about job losses at the company amid ongoing Brexit concerns. Jaguar said manufacturing the new XJ and other EVs will safeguard thousands of jobs. The carmaker announced cuts earlier this year 鈥?however, those were managerial positions, not production-line jobs. After the new XJ, it鈥檚 also uncertain how many of the other cars to be built at the Castle Bromwich plant going forward will be all-electric. Last month, the carmaker announced it was partnering with BMW to develop next-generation electric powertrains. FTC: We use income earning auto affiliate links.
It took Tony Blair, the Prime Minister at that time, to make her aware of the fact that her actions were endangering the Monarchy. People in Britain were turning against her. And in a very big way. There was one incident that really put it in perspective. The public demanded that the Royal Standard, the Flag that flew over Buckingham Palace should be at half mast in respect of Diana. Prince Philip and the Queen Mother were appalled. They stated that it should only be at half mast if one of the major Royals had died. The Queen had a decision to make. Do what the public wanted and come down to London, and do the flag, or else loose her people. Ever since then, the Monarchy have changed. They are much more open to the public, and are now back in favour. The public only get to see Her Majesty when she is out and about on public engagements. But its behind the scenes at home where most of her work is done. She rises early and sits down at her desk.
