Under the skin, the most noteworthy mechanical change is the arrival of a new 48-volt mild hybrid system that works with a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder to deliver a total of 286 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. The system allows the engine to shut off under braking once vehicle speed dips below 11 mph, and when accelerating, the electric motor assists the engine. The hybrid powertrain replaces the previous non-hyrbrid 286-hp 2.0-liter turbo as the step-up engine and is exclusive to the R Dynamic HSE. EPA estimates are not yet available, so we don鈥檛 know if the new Discovery Sport improves on the mediocre fuel economy of its predecessor (21 mpg city/24 mpg highway, 22 mpg combined). Two key driver aids move from the options list to standard spec: automatic emergency braking (with cyclist and pedestrian detection) and lane-keep assist. They鈥檙e joined by a new driver-drowsiness monitor. As before, the Discovery Sport offers a 2-person third row but it鈥檚 strictly for kids. The front seats add an available massaging function. Another new technology called 鈥楥learSight Ground View鈥?has also been introduced to help drivers navigate high city curbs or tackle rough terrain by projecting camera imagery that offers a virtual 180-degree view beneath the vehicle onto the central touchscreen1. The digital transformation does not stop there. Wireless charging for compatible mobile devices is also introduced for the first time within the lower center console, while a 4G Wi-Fi hotspot5, alongside USB and 12-volt connectivity points on every row, ensure passengers remain charged and connected. They were off to Ghana or somewhere. They weren't very chatty. Even though Adrian was dead keen to look it over. I think they must have been tired. We read one of their articles in a Land Rover magazine later. But we did meet a nice guy who gave us a jump start when the battery was flat. He had a posh Land Rover, well, it was a Discovery, and he was dead helpful. The flat battery was my fault. We had an excursion to Baelo Claudio. Very nice. Lots of Roman ruins. Well worth a visit if you are down Tarifa way. I said I wasn't going to wander round but couldn't resist so I got lost amidst the stones. Meanwhile Adrian had the engine turning over and eventually the battery died. The problem was that Baelo Claudio is in the middle of nowhere up and down a few steep hills.

The camper rests on the rear load bin on the vehicle and is connected via four retaining connectors. Demounting the camper requires the retaining bolts to be undone, the standing legs removed from the mounts. Once this has been done (about 15min), the camper needs to be raised so that the vehicle can be moved. The standing legs involve a very manual process of walking around the camper winding in the legs in turn. Once the camper is raised, the vehicle can be driven away and the process of lowering the camper begins. This requires a number of laps of the camper as each support post is lowered. Mounting the camper is reverse of the demount process except this is the hardest bit - reversing the vehicle squarely under the camper. My tip on this process is to use low-range reverse as it gives me less speed whilst reversing. Central heating: Perhaps not fully required for the Southern Hemisphere, the combination of the ALDE3010 hot water and central heating system on the camper is a winner for the Northern Hemisphere.
