Seven is typical. Occasionally, we'll get a longer period of time, and sometimes it'll only be three or four days. Our "30 Minutes With" series features cars we spent half an hour driving during the just-concluded Western Automotive Journalists Media Days in Monterey, California. Day one of Media Days is a driving program, with journalists taking cars from the staging area at Quail Lodge in Carmel Valley to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca via Laureles Grade. Once there, you swap cars with another journalist for the drive back, get a different car at The Quail, and repeat. Apart from an hour's lunch (this year sponsored by Nissan), this is the day from 9:00 a.m. 4:00 p.m., although heavy rains forced us to call it a day at 2:30 this year, reducing the number of cars we could drive. Twenty-one years of professional TireKicking (I reviewed cars on TV and radio before launching TireKicker in 2008) have put me behind the wheel of just about every make of automobile available in the USA. One of the few that I'd never driven is an Alfa Romeo. Alfa left the U.S. 1995, two years before I began writing about cars. And while they've been back for four model years now, I've never been booked in one from a press fleet. Enter Media Days 2018. The 2018 Alfa Romeo Guilia Ti Lusso Q4 became car number three for the day, on the one-way run from the Quail Lodge to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.
My son has recently found employment with a high end sports company based in the North West. After finishing his degree he struggled to get a job within his chosen field of marketing. Marketing is a very competitive sector and after many interviews he kept being rejected. In order to keep some money coming in, he has worked in bars and shops and has not been lazy at all. Therefore I think he really deserves his new opportunity and hope he will do well. The job is based about 25 miles from where we live and in rush hour it can take between forty five minutes and an hour to get there. As a temporary measure I have allowed him to drive my car to his office everyday but we really do need to find a better solution. My car is a Mercedes CLK and it costs a fortune on petrol for him plus the insurance is through the roof. I have a second car but it is basically an old Jeep which we use for the dogs, not ideal for turning up for lunch with the girls in. I have had a look at some offers on the internet and I think the Toyota IQ might be the ideal car for him. It looks rather minimalistic and I have been told that it is popular with youngsters because the small engine makes insurance affordable. The small engine also makes it exempt from road tax which is another bonus when every penny count. I think we will go and have a look this weekend. The newest member of the Jaguar family of SUVs, the E-PACE, is a five-seat compact SUV which packs the design and performance of a Jaguar sports car into a practical and connected all-wheel drive vehicle. The E-PACE follows the World Car of the Year-winning F-PACE performance SUV and the brand鈥檚 first all-electric SUV, the Jaguar I-PACE. Competitively priced within their respective segments, the 2018 Jaguar XE compact luxury sedan, and the 2018 Jaguar F-PACE luxury SUV appeal to an all-new segment of buyers for the Jaguar brand. For the 2018 model year, the XE is available with three gasoline engine options, a 247-hp turbocharged four-cylinder, a 296-hp turbocharged four-cylinder, and a 380-hp supercharged V6. The F-PACE is available with the same powertrain line-up. Both vehicles are also available with a 180-hp turbocharged diesel engine, which returns 42mpg highway2 on Jaguar XE models and 33mpg highway2 on F-PACE models. The Jaguar XF is similarly offered with four available powertrains, two turbocharged four-cylinder powertrains producing 247- and 296-hp, a supercharged V6 offering 380-hp and a 180-hp turbocharged four-cylinder diesel offering an EPA certified 42mpg highway2.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto continue to spread across automakers' infotainment systems. The latest to gain integration? The automaker announced Tuesday that Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality will finally be optional for any vehicle equipped with the InControl Touch Pro and Touch Pro Duo infotainment systems. Both will be standard equipment on the 2019 Jaguar I-Pace, however. The option will come in the form of a "Smartphone Pack." The package will be offered on every 2019 Jaguar and Land Rover vehicle when equipped with the proper infotainment system. InControl Touch Pro was first introduced in 2016 and did away with buttons in favor of a tablet-like style measuring 10 inches. InTouch Duo Pro builds upon the original system with a dual-touchscreen unit for the upper and lower portion of the center stack. It also controls HVAC systems aside from all important controls. The InTouch Duo Pro first debuted with the 2018 Land Rover Range Rover Velar; the infotainment system is standard on the 2019 I-Pace. Apple CarPlay, in particular, has caused a flurry of positive news after the most recent software update for iPhone users granted more third-party applications for the system. Now, users can choose Google Maps and Waze for their navigation needs, rather than Apple's own Maps application. The Cupertino, California-based tech giant is also in the middle of completely overhauling its Maps app after years of ho-hum performance.
