In recent years Land Rover has occasionally produced Special Editions of the Defender. These have usually been little more than a vehicle being fitted with certain option packs and equipment, although more bespoke Editions have been produced. Mostly they have been aimed at the more lucrative 'lifestyle' market than the Defender's usual commercial and off-road markets. In 1992 the first Special Edition Land Rover Defender was produced. Called the 90SV (SV stood for 'Special Vehicles', as all the vehicles were produced by Land Rover's Special Vehicle Operations department), they were painted turquoise and were fitted with a black canvas Soft Top with standard door tops. Alloy wheels were also fitted, together with rear disc brakes (at that time a first for a Land Rover). Despite the vehicle's sporty looks, it used the standard 200Tdi turbodiesel engine. Only 90 were made for the UK market. For Land Rover's 50th anniversary in 1998 two special editions were built.
Jaguar Land Rover appears in rude health four years on from the pounds 1.15 billion takeover by Mumbai-based Tata at a time when its very survival was under threat. The Range Rover Evoque and the Jaguar XF have been vital to the revival, and while remaining tight-lipped about future models, Mr Tata said there would be plenty more to come - including the FType, the convertible sports car. The company's successes - which saw retail sales rise 27 per cent last year to 305,859 units - comes on the back of soaring demand in China, which is on course to become the group's strongest market. While JLR has agreed a joint venture with China's Chery Automobile to establish a production base in the Far East, Mr Tata said Britishness remained at the heart of the company and there were no plans to change that. He said: 'The two brands have their home in the UK. Their heritage is here and they exude Britishness.
There鈥檚 a big display in the center stack, a digital instrument cluster, and a new steering wheel with integrated controls. The door panels no longer look like that of vintage cars and now feature proper handles, proper storage compartments at the bottom, and controls to operate the windows and the mirrors. The seats are brand-new and now offer enhanced lateral support and they look much more comfortable than before. But despite being fancier than the previous Defender, it still has a no-nonsense interior focused on simplicity and practicality. For instance, it comes with a rubberized flooring and it can be ordered in various seating configurations. The standard model offers seating for five, with two seats in the front and three in the rear. However, you can order it with an extra seat in the front for a six-seat layout. This third seat in the front row was designed as an occasional seat, so it鈥檚 not exactly comfortable for long trips. But it enables you to take two passengers in the front row, a cool feat you can鈥檛 find in other production models.
