A Brief History Of The Model T Ford
The downside of that was wheel slip on loose or slippery surfaces. Ford鈥檚 engineers were well aware of the need to protect the potentially delicate ignition system from water and so they decided to use a low voltage magneto mounted on the flywheel and thus covered by the flywheel housing. This magneto supplied current to trembler coils (vibrator coils) to provide the necessary electrical voltage to the spark plugs. This was a system common to stationary engines and so was more likely to be familiar to mechanics in rural America. Starting the engine was done by winding the crank handle at the front of the car. With its low compression ratio the engine was made to be relatively easy to crank and the low voltage magneto provided adequate spark at low revolutions. Back in 1908 there were not a lot of people who were familiar with driving a car. These were the days before synchromesh had been invented and so a straight cut sliding gear system was sometimes used, but such a 鈥渃rash鈥?gearbox is difficult to learn to use well.
Yet, among enthusiasts, straight-line performance is as popular and important as ever. Combining the three forms鈥攄rag, road course and oval track competition鈥攊n a three-heat format widens the potential fan base. It would also bolster the entry list of competitors. Many big oval track facilities also have infield road courses and most could also stage eighth-mile drag racing if a full quarter-mile were not possible. It would also open up creative possibilities in TV packaging. Multi-discipline racing is not new, but it鈥檚 never been done on a grand scale, nor done in professional ranks. What do you think? Jim Resnick started his career writing and photographing for Vette, Car Craft and Chevy High Performance magazines. He then launched the BMW-focused Bimmer as Editor-in-Chief, while also holding down the Tech Editor chair at Sports Car International. Jim was then drafted into PR and Marketing roles with Mercedes-Benz, Ferrari, Jaguar Land Rover and ran Communications for Fender Musical Instrument Corporation, bringing a unique perspective to reporting. He鈥檚 also a recovering racer and guitarist.
It falls short of providing a genuinely sporty drive due to light steering with limited feedback and a weight induced reluctance to change direction quickly - but you would have to be pretty unreasonable to hold that against it. A smart, safe and speedy way to shift a family from A to B, the Range Rover Sport is an excellent choice. The TDV8 means pace doesn't need to be sacrificed to avoid the family finances taking a battering and there are options aplenty to keep younger passengers entertained. A highly capable load-lugger, it's well suited to family life - but you'll need to measure your garage first. The normal process is to start out small and work your way up, but Land Rover has deliberately targeted the Range Rover Sport at a younger audience. A cheaper, sportier, more viable version of the bells and whistles Range Rover it may be, but the Range Rover Sport is still too expensive to be considered as the first rung of the ladder for most.
Mulally has plans to have Lincoln launch a small car that is based on the Focus platform and may include variations such as a luxury SUV. 33.6 billion previously. The trend is to slowly clean up the balance sheet which growth in the Asian markets might facilitate. Innovation is essential to being competitive in the current global car market. Mulally has described Ford as a 鈥渢echnology company - not just a car company鈥? Ford plans to continue to improve the internal combustion engine, use more lightweight materials, increase use of alternate fuels like biofuels and expand from hybrids to all-electric vehicles, such as the recently unveiled Focus Electric14. These short term strategies in innovation, however, are not exactly new within the industry. Ford needs to differentiate themselves with cutting edge technology in the market place long term. With an ever increasing population, will the car as we know it be practical in the future? Will the 鈥漟lying鈥?cars that we see in Sci-Fi movies become reality? Will high-speed people movers be the way forward? Will scooters become an inner city trend? There are three Australian car makers in Australia: Ford, Holden and Toyota.
