A Great Farm Diary

A Great Farm Diary

What I probably won't have enough time for is other stuff -- mechanical work on our numerous and aging vehicles and equipment, harvesting the garden, the sheep care, the landscaping around the new extension, and so on. Snow will come soon enough. Everything will have to be ready. So, in the absence of money for drywall, and the presence of a growing honey-do list of other things, I switched gears and started on those other things. I began by tinkering a little with the truck, hoping for some miraculous reprieve with the transmission problems. I double checked the oil level, and took it for a test drive or two. Maybe the "snake oil" additive had gone to work on the clutches and bands and server piston seals. No such luck. The thing drives well enough and doesn't slip in first gear, and so can be used for very small trips, such as to our local builder's yard, or to the transfer station.

For safety, seven airbags are standard, including two front row side torso airbags, two side curtain airbags for both rows, and a driver鈥檚 knee airbag. For rear collisions, active front headrests designed to help reduce whiplash are standard as well as brake lights that flash under emergency braking. A Pre-Collision System (PCS) becomes optional which includes Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Lane Keeping Assist (LKA). The Avensis received a five star rating () under the latest Euro NCA Pratings scheme with an 81% overall score and a 90% score for adult occupant safety. The Avensis wagon began being imported again to Japan in mid-2011, with the 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine and CVT transmission. The Avensis offers three petrol and three diesel engine options. The new engines feature more power and lower CO2 emissions. The new ZR engines became the first to introduce Toyota's Valvematic technology. All engines are mated to a 6-speed manual transmission while the 1.8 L and 2.0 L petrol engines are available with a Multidrive S CVT transmission. The 2.2 litre D-4D 150 hp engine is available with a 6-speed automatic transmission. On 2 August 2010 it was announced the British Touring Car Championship's NGTC prototype car will be built around the Toyota Avensis. Series organiser TOCA, which will fully introduce the new low-cost NGTC technical regulations in 2011, said that the Japanese manufacturer would supply a donor car and a new body shell to the programme.

鈥淚t鈥檚 not the rough old Defender that it was,鈥?admits Sheppard, pointing out that there are now more USB ports than there are seats. Jaguar Land Rover has a company-wide mandate to offer an electrified version of all its models by 2020, and the Defender is no exception. North America will not, however, get the diesel engines sold elsewhere. There will be no manual transmission offered, with only an eight-speed automatic transmission available. There will also be two physical sizes of the SUV. The two-door will be known as the 鈥?0鈥?and the four-door as the 鈥?10.鈥?In Canada, we鈥檒l get the four-door for sale first, which can seat either five or seven people. The two-door can seat two, four or five people, and if a special folding middle seat is ordered that replaces the centre console in the front row, it can seat six. Only five of six trim levels will be available in Canada, varying from basic to luxurious. 93,600 for the most kitted-out trim. It鈥檚 a far cry from the cheap, utilitarian four-by-four Maurice Wilks envisioned, a fact which will no doubt continue to drive vintage Defender prices through the roof. But the 2020 Defender is also quite a bit better in just about every measurable way. And more important for Canadians, we don鈥檛 need to be related to the Queen any more to get our hands on one. India's Tata Motors Ltd. Land Rover will have ties to Ford Motor Co. well into the next decade. Two SUVs will share Ford's EUCD global vehicle platform. Ford engines will be under the hood of some vehicles for at least eight years. Land Rover plans to counter by increasing the use of lightweight materials, such as aluminum, to boost fuel economy. 1.5 billion on hybrid-powertrain development for vehicles that will arrive starting in 2012.
