At that point, I have to do is keep the wheels pointed in the right direction, applying enough throttle to chug through the earth without getting stuck or sliding. A multitude of displays help me along, showing the angle and suspension travel of each wheel. I can also see how much torque is being applied and where, so I can modify my input accordingly. Combined with hill descent assist, the Rover simply takes over and gently brings me down a hill on its own. I figured now I would shuttle over to the actual course where a separate track-ready Range Rover would be warmed up and waiting for me, but that was not so. I was told to stay in the vehicle and, after a quick hose-down and check for tire punctures, I was told to grab the helmet in the back seat and hit the track. Best of both worlds? The Range Rover hunkers down in Dynamic mode, ready to fire all 550 ponies from the F-TYPE R-sourced 5.0-liter supercharged V8.
The Selinda Spilway, north of the Delta is flowing and the two river systems of the Okavango and Zambezi have now joined up at Linyanti. The Savuti Channel is running for the first time since 1983 but has not reached Savuti yet at the time of writing. The sandy river bed is very dry and sandy so the progress is very slow. 20 years or more. 60 years ago, the explorer David Livingstone described the lake as a "shimmering lake, some 130 km long and 15 wide". 鈥淭he locals laughed at you few years ago if you asked them for directions to this lake filled with water,鈥?I say to Hennie. 鈥淎s far as they鈥檙e concerned it was always just an endless dust bed. Contemporary maps show the lake has shrivelled to no more than 35km in length. But the history of the area is worth remembering. Livingstone scribbled a few cultural notes at the time, describing the locals (Missionary Travels, chap. 鈥榗racked their heads鈥? There鈥檚 further evidence of other African traditions particular to this Babel story thanks to research conducted by Scottish social anthropologist Sir James Frazer.
While rovers can go for years without water or food, they can't do close to the amount of work a human can in the same time. It may take months to travel a mile for a rover, but if you get an astronaut and a vehicle on Mars, they can cover an extrememly larger area than any robotic mission. Obviously, a human has to come back, but this final mission objective is also the best thing about sending a human to do a robot's job. Until very recently, all the robotic missions sent into space have been destined to remain there. Yet, in 1969, when Apollo 11 landed on the Moon, the astronauts brought back handfuls of lunar rocks for scientists to examine and study. Having the ability to not only explore but also retrieve from the mission location makes sending a human on a twelve hour mission just as useful as sending a probe on one that lasts a decade. As a matter of fact, the early days of spaceflight were dependent entirely upon the abilities of human pilots.
It produces such thrust you almost have to warn passengers before tapping the accelerator. The thing is fast. ItAAEs not nimble. It remains a truck, and trucks, by genetics and design, remain the elephants of the vehicle world. Real-world experience says you donAAEt want to drive the Range Rover Sport Supercharged in congested, contentious urban traffic. ItAAEs still too big, too heavy and too clumsy to find true happiness in that sort of outing. Nor would you, or should you, attempt to take tight curves at high speeds in this one. The Sport Supercharged comes admirably equipped with compensatory electronicsAupatented AoAll-terrain Dynamic Stability ControlAo, cornering brake control, and emergency braking assistance. But not one of them is engineered to overcome the laws of physics. Bottom line: In terms of utility, there is nothing in theRangeRoverSport Supercharged that trumps many less-expensive full-size sport-utility vehicles. But it beats all of them in the matter of luxury, and it gives most of them a run for the money in the field of sport. Ride, acceleration and handling: Ride and acceleration are excellent, as is handling on long stretches with gentle curves. City handling is borderline horrendous.
