Cars Should Be Fit For Purpose
A watch, for example. Somewhere, I have one of those trendy Tissot Touch things, which includes a couple of alarms, two chronographs, a compass, an altimeter, a thermometer, some sort of weather predictor (I think), an altimeter - have I already said that? It鈥檚 a fascinating bit of kit, actually, but because I don鈥檛 wear it very often, I struggle to remember how to operate all these things. Worse still, Hammond has one as well, and he鈥檚 completely forgotten. So I spend hours setting his up for him. After wrestling with this, it鈥檚 a relief to put on the old Omega, which just tells the time and nothing else. It doesn鈥檛 even show the date. The iPhone is another one. It鈥檚 an amazing thing, but when it went wrong the other day, I had to put the SIM card in my faithful eight-year-old Nokia. I couldn鈥檛 take any pictures or play Battleships, but I also couldn鈥檛 help noticing it worked better as a telephone for talking to people.
At least the rear seats get cupholders; they also fold down easily and completely flat. The trunk is roomy for a small car. In terms of connectivity, there is Apple CarPlay but no Android Auto. Toyota has reached a deal with Google and will be introducing Android Auto in some 2020 models 鈥?just not the Corolla, yet. Amazon鈥檚 Alexa comes aboard; there is wifi and available wireless charging. Phone apps provide nav. The base infotainment screen is 7 inches; step up from the L trim and you get the 8-inch floating screen. It is integrated well enough that it does not look like it was stuck in place, and is surrounded by glossy black trim. There are bits of brightwork to keep the cabin from looking too dark. Sedans should account for 90 percent of Corolla sales. The hatch, which launched last June, is proving popular with young male buyers and should account for the remainder.

When Mazda invited us to Milan to see its new concept car, we knew it must be something important. Normally concept cars get their 15 minutes of fame at an auto show, and then it's off to the next press conference to see what the following automaker will introduce. Not so with Mazda's latest styling endeavor. The Japanese automaker wanted our full and undivided attention, with the center of international design and fashion in Italy as a fitting backdrop. The Shinari concept, which roughly translates to "resistance to being bent," will serve as a the basis for Mazda's new design language, and many of the styling cues will make it to future production vehicles. That means that the Shinari will essentially affect the design of every vehicle coming from the Japanese automaker for the next several years. An important car for Mazda? The Shinari was officially unveiled earlier today, and we spent several hours talking with Mazda's artists about the design and how it will affect the automaker's forthcoming vehicles.
Land Rover has agreed major new sponsorship with the Born Free Foundation, one of the world's foremost wildlife charities, continuing its successful Global Conservation Partnership first forged in 2002 and confirming Born Free as its primary global conservation partner. The origin of Land Rover's historic association with Born Free goes back to the beginning where Land Rover's were featured in the classic wildlife film Born Free, starring the Foundation's founders, Virginia McKenna and Bill Travers. The requirement was then as it is now to rely on the Land Rover vehicles to reach the wildlife in the most remote of locations. Land Rover is committed to continuing to provide the Foundation with practical help by supplying vehicles as well as financial backing for the next five years, reflecting its integrated approach to building global sustainability. The new sponsorship programme will see Land Rover vehicles deployed by the Born Free Foundation in Kenya, India and South Africa where they support the charity's vital field work.
