Hyundai Kona Vs Citroen C3 Aircross Vs Mazda CX-3
With SUV sales booming and superminis continuing to be best-sellers in Britain, it鈥檚 no wonder car makers are bringing the two together. Hyundai is the latest brand to join the fray, with its new Kona, and thanks to its outlandish looks, this car is bound to draw attention. Yet the real battle it鈥檒l need to win will be fought on equipment, price, the practicality of its interior, and comfort. That鈥檚 because the Kona is taking on our class leader, the Citroen C3 Aircross. Like so many Citroens, it鈥檚 quirky, but it doesn鈥檛 compromise, and that has really impressed us since it arrived late last year. Then there鈥檚 the Mazda CX-3. Despite being the oldest car here, it makes a strong case with its sharp styling and handling. This is a tough class, so if you want a small SUV read on to find out which of these makes the most compelling case.
25,210. With comfortable seating capacity for seven and a better-than-class average warranty of 60 months or 60,000 miles, its offers prospective buyers an option to seriously consider. It comes in four trims and offers a choice of two engines: a 2.4L 168hp I4 and a 3.0L 220hp V6. People are bragging the 2.4L up because it pleases the efficiency-conscious by yielding 20/25 mpg city/highway and still produces appreciable power. With the smaller engine choice comes a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) that also acts to enhance fuel economy. The larger 3.0L engine is mated with a 6-speed automatic transmission and an optional innovative 4WD system as well. Though, it is designed more for pavement driving than for off-road scenarios. The fold-down third row of seating maximizes cargo space and all models come with a nice array of standard safety features including 4-wheel independent suspension. Fully-loaded models come with dual automatic climate control; seats trimmed in leather; keyless entry and even a compact 3rd-row entertainment system that features a 9-inch LCD screen with wireless remote and headphones.
It's quiet and solid and offers a smooth ride, a high seating position, off-road capability, and enough techno-gimmicks to require a sidebar. These positive traits do come at a cost, which can be seen in the curb weight, poor fuel economy (14 mpg in our hands), and less-than-enthusiastic roadholding. Several of the LR3's competitors that have more of a penchant for on-road use do not suffer as severely from these drawbacks, but they don't have the LR3's off-road knack and magnificent God-save-the-Queen I'm-going-to-colonize-everyone-on-my-commute attitude. If those are your priorities, then by all means, be the lord of the interstate in your LR3. My problem here is that I'm not a hard-core off-road type. I'm impressed by the high-tech four-wheel-drive features, but they don't make me want to go rock hopping or bog crawling. So the LR3's undoubted dirty virtues are wasted on me. I find myself fixating on the fact that this vehicle weighs in almost 800 pounds north of the old Disco, costs 10 grand more, isn't much quicker, and still feels top-heavy. Yes, it's solid goods, roomy, and beautifully appointed.
