'Hyundai-Kia Is Becoming A Global Car Superpower To Match Toyota And VW'

Japan massively changed the car game between the sixties and the eighties. But if you鈥檙e looking for the nation that鈥檚 rocked the car design/manufacturing/retail scene more than any other between the nineties and today, look at The Land of Morning Calm: South Korea. When, in 1987, I first parachuted into the country, which is about the size of Scotland, it was rebuilding after the triple trauma of the Japanese occupation, the Korean War and the assassination of its president. South Korea wasn鈥檛 just rough around the edges during my first visit. It was rough all over, apart from where the 1988 Olympic venues were being built. Back then, South Korean cars were as pretty as Mike Tyson, funnier than Jim Carrey and nastier than a Liam Neeson character. And Hyundai鈥檚 Ulsan plant, which was tasked with building most of them, had machine guns on its perimeter walls. To say that the Korean car industry has changed since 1987 is the automotive understatement of the century.

Bof came wif a two-speed transfer box and permanent four-wheew-drive. A computer controwwed progressivewy wocking centraw differentiaw ensured traction was retained in tough conditions. A simiwar differentiaw was avaiwabwe on de rear axwe to aid traction, uh-hah-hah-hah. The Discovery 3 was fitted wif muwtipwe ewectronic traction controw systems. Hiww Descent Controw (HDC) prevented vehicwe 'runaways' when descending steep gradients and 4-wheew Ewectronic Traction Controw (4ETC) prevented wheew spin in wow-traction conditions. An on-road system, Dynamic Stabiwity Controw (DSC), prevented skidding when steering and braking at speed. The vehicwe awso featured de 'Terrain Response' system. Previouswy, off-road driving had been a skiww dat many drivers found daunting. A wide-ranging knowwedge of de vehicwe was needed to be abwe to sewect de correct gear, transfer ratio, various differentiaw systems and master various techniqwes reqwired for tackwing steep hiwws, deep water and oder tough terrain, uh-hah-hah-hah. Terrain Response attempted to take away as many of de difficuwties as possibwe. The driver sewected a terrain type ("Sand", "Grass, Gravew they are well made pieces of equipment that engineers have put a lot of thought into. They should be maintained at that standard. These vehicles have Electronic Air Suspension (EAS), which uses airbag struts instead of springs on each wheel. The car adjusts its ride according to conditions, and uses an air compressor unit to do this. The original compressor can wear out over time, usually showing up as error messages on the LCD screen on the dash, or at service time when the car is put onto the diagnostic machine.

Changes will be subtle, with a lot of elegance. Also, we could see changes in terms of new color options in the offer, new wheels designs, and similar things. When it comes to the interior design, we probably won鈥檛 see more important changes and the reason is pretty obvious. The current model already comes with a pretty amazing cabin design, which is characterized by lots of hi-end materials. The dashboard looks very elegant and definitely makes Discovery one of the most elegant models in the class when it comes to interior design. The cabin is also quite functional and practical. Typically for a mid-size SUV, it can accommodate up to seven people. Still, base trims come with two rows of seating only. First and second rows are very generous in terms of space and offer plenty of comforts. It is good to mention that even most basic versions feature leather upholstery and power-adjustable front seats. When it comes to cargo capacity, the overall volume goes around 83 cubic feet, which are above-average numbers for the class.
