2019 Land Rover LR2 Photos And Info

Land Rover鈥檚 slowest seller in the U.S. 2013 model year鈥攍iterally. A turbocharged engine tops a list of upgrades coming to the LR2 compact crossover this fall. The same 2.0-liter four-cylinder motor that motivates the Range Rover Evoque now will power the LR2 as well, replacing the latter鈥檚 3.2-liter inline-six. Ye olde 230-hp six, shared with several Volvos, was refined but far too thirsty to satisfy customers. The turbo four not only delivers more output than its predecessor鈥攗p 10 hp to 240 and 16 lb-ft of torque to 250鈥攂ut is 88 pounds lighter. Between the weight savings and the relatively better efficiency of the newer, smaller engine, Land Rover expects the 2013 LR2 to better last year鈥檚 EPA ratings of 15 mpg in the city and 22 highway. The rest of the running gear, from the six-speed automatic transmission to the Haldex all-wheel-drive system, carries over from the old vehicle. Cosmetically, the LR2 gets a nice refresh. The grille is brightly finished and slightly altered stylistically, while the innards of the headlights and taillights have been redesigned and now pack LEDs. A few new paint colors join the roster. Interior upgrades are more noticeable. The new center stack houses a seven-inch touch screen, and a five-inch screen is wedged between conventional dials in the gauge cluster. The screens are standard, but navigation remains an option鈥攊t gets the same user-friendlier software update as do other Land Rovers鈥攁nd a rearview camera is more cash, too. The LR2 offers customers two optional sound systems, both made by a British company called Meridian. In addition to applications in Jaguar and Land Rover products, Meridian supplies the audio system for McLaren鈥檚 MP4-12C. The 2013 LR2 makes its auto-show debut in Los Angeles in November, and sales begin early next year. 495 cheaper than the Evoque, which has the same engine, the Range Rover badge, and is eminently cooler looking. That鈥檚 going to make the LR2 a tough sell within the Land Rover showroom.

Get ready to say goodbye to the aging LR4 and hello to the new Discovery. The handsome SUV makes its world debut this month at the 2016 Paris auto show and will be on sale by mid-2017, arriving as a 2018 model. Although it鈥檚 aimed at soccer moms鈥攊t鈥檚 Land Rover鈥檚 rival to three-row, seven-seat luxury SUVs such as the Audi Q7 and Volvo XC90鈥攊t鈥檚 still every bit as capable as its predecessor when heading off-road, as you鈥檒l discover in these promotional videos. In developing the Discovery, Land Rover drove prototypes in more than 20 countries and racked up more than a million miles. Land Rover describes the SUV as 鈥渦nstoppable鈥?on any surface, including grass, mud, rocks, sand, snow and even the race track. Of course, they had a good starting point as the Discovery makes use of Land Rover鈥檚 aluminum platform found in the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport SUVs. Known as the Premium Lightweight Architecture (PLA), the platform should also bring significant improvements in efficiency and dynamic qualities over the LR4 thanks to reduced weight. The covers will come off the Discovery on September 28, the eve of the Paris auto show. To learn about some of the other vehicles appearing at the French event, head to our dedicated hub.

JLR鈥檚 writedown signals that previous spending splurges won鈥檛 deliver the hoped for-financial returns. If that鈥檚 the case, then it鈥檚 reasonable for shareholders and bondholders to question whether the new investments will either. After all, the person in charge of capital allocation 鈥?chief executive Ralf Speth 鈥?hasn鈥檛 changed. Soon after Tata acquired Jaguar and Rover in 2008, the British business embarked on a massive spending spree. In hindsight, the company probably added more manufacturing capacity than was wise and tried to offer too many models, especially sedans. It helped, though, that comparatively little of its spending actually appeared on its profit and loss statement to begin with. Lately, higher depreciation charges have become more of a problem. JLR capitalized about 80 percent of its research and product development spending, a much higher figure than most other European carmakers (although similar to Aston Martin). That鈥檚 one reason why reported profits tended to be far higher than cash flow 鈥?often a warning of trouble ahead. Now, the writedown has closed some of that gap, but at the expense of wiping out most of the last three years鈥?net profit. The impairment helps in one respect: Future depreciation costs will be lower, helping profitability. But it erases almost one-third of JLR鈥檚 net assets. That won鈥檛 help allay fears around its finances. With diesel cars probably on the way out, and sticker prices under pressure in some countries, free cash flow will probably remain negative for at least the next couple of years. JLR has 4.4 billion pounds of cash and untapped credit facilities, but its 650 million euro of bonds maturing in 2024 yield 8 percent, which isn鈥檛 a sign of confidence. Speth has certainly had bad luck. Brexit and diesel鈥檚 rapid demise couldn鈥檛 have been foreseen. Even so, he鈥檚 the boss, so he鈥檚 the one who carries the can.
