The most desirable Land Rovers of modern times are the few hundred 1993 model year Defender 110 models that were sold in America. At those prices you do not see many of these trucks crashing through the woods of Western Massachusetts and Vermont, or mountaineering in Moab. They are just too valuable, and the Series trucks are too old. Yet we have plenty of clients with Defenders on Long Island, Nantucket, and Martha鈥檚 Vineyard. A small number of Defenders were privately imported to the United States, and a few more trickle in every year. Those trucks occupy a lower price point that the US market Defenders, with most of the same characteristics. The grey market Defenders often come with diesel engines and other options that were never sold in the USA - something many enthusiasts find very desirable. I once flew to the Canary Island of Tenerife which takes about four hours. That is the longest flight I have ever done and I just know that I would not survive any longer than that. I reluctantly want to the travel agents with the other girls. I knew I would end up booking with them no matter where they decided to go. I didn't want to miss out. I started to look up statistics on the internet which explained that it was much safer to travel by plane than to drive in your Land Rover Discovery Sussex car. It might be true but it didn't seem that way in my head. Thankfully the girls soon realised that they would be stretching the budget that little bit too far if they decided to head for far off shores, hence we are going to Majorca. It is only a two hour flight but I am still very nervous. I am just keeping my fingers crossed that there is no turbulence or horrid thunders storms!

The Discovery鈥檚 options are spread across three grades: SE, HSE, and HSE Luxury. The Discovery doesn鈥檛 lack in safety. Along with the usual suite of airbags, all units come with a 360-degree camera system, parking sensors all around, rain-sensing wipers, and, for 2019, lane-keeping assist and rear cross-traffic detection. There鈥檚 even a clear exit monitor, which warns rear occupants of approaching obstacles to each rear door, via a warning light next to the door handle. Scale the trim ladder, and you鈥檒l gain blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control with a traffic crawling function, high-speed emergency braking, and traffic-sign recognition with adaptive speed limitation. There is no published crash-test information regarding the Discovery. In a world of crossovers and SUVs that look handsome and go down the road in reasonable comfort, the Land Rover Discovery stands out for making good on the promises that its name and styling make. The air suspension also means that, no matter what you place in the back, the cars sits beautifully square on the road. A joy to drive. Why did I buy a Range Rover P38? Stylish, classless, tough, cheap to buy, comfortable, useful and genuinely cool. As numbers thin, rough examples are broken for parts or scrapped or written-off, we are now left to fight over the good ones. Prices are on the rise, with healthy early examples now changing hands for more than 拢10,000.
