Future Planetary Exploration: Mars 2019 Instruments
Each measurement point will be approximately the size of a grain of sand. An example of how the PIXL instrument will map elements (identified by their chemical symbol in each panel) at a fine resolution across rock surfaces. The SHERLOC instrument will map mineral and organic composition at similar resolution. The new capability to measure composition at near microscopic resolution will be revolutionary. If you look at soils and the interiors of most rocks, you鈥檒l find that they are composed of many smaller rocks and inclusions. By taking many fine-scale measurements, each rock or patch of soil becomes a rich story of many rock fragments that together provide clues to their individual formation and that of their larger rock or soil type. SuperCam and SHERLOC鈥檚 laser spectroscopy will have an important capability that Curiosity lacks - they can easily identify and map the presence of organic materials. While many processes other than life can produce organic chemicals, life as we understand it requires a rich abundance of organic material. A key goal for the 2020 rover is to find biosignatures to indicate pre-biotic chemistry or life itself.
A small side grille and a strongly styled side sill are the other main attractions of the Range Rover Sport's profile. In back, squarish, wraparound taillights look like they've been plucked and plumped from the Evoque. One of my primary criticisms of the old Sport was its cabin - a point of view not helped after sitting inside the spectacular new Range Rover. This new model, fortunately, is considerably better than the vehicle it replaces. Material quality is greatly improved, with a dash that's covered almost exclusively in leather, save for a strip of mesh that runs level with the instrument cluster and houses the push-button start, central air vents and glovebox release. The cabin overall is quite well laid out, with everything in easy reach. The center console, home to the shifter, climate control and Terrain Response system controls, is rendered in high-quality textured aluminum on my tester, though other finishes are available.
Thanks to the numerous units plying the streets, as well as the online market, parts can be purchased from outside-the-casa shops from the genuine, replacement, to the third party ones. However, maintaining one can be somewhat higher in costs than main competitors due to one reason, fuel expenses. Having a sole automatic transmission option does not help but consume more fuel, so drive prudently or set aside some money for gasoline. Making a distant past of bland Mazda designs, the 3's exterior shouts "European". This vehicle (sedan or hatchback) exhibits chiseled lines and sporty proportions. This design would age very well, unlike the current one that is perfect for halloween (October is very far away). Driver rules inside the cabin, especially that all controls are aimed towards the captain of the vehicle. Being sporty in theme, it does not have the dreaded fake wood trim and opts to use black materials.
NASA today announced the goals for its planned Mars 2020 rover mission. The mission will be based on the Curiosity rover and its entry, descent, and landing design. Explore an astrobiologically relevant ancient environment on Mars to decipher its geological processes and history, including the assessment of past habitability. Assess the biosignature preservation potential within the selected geological environment and search for potential biosignatures. Support technology demonstrations and weather measurements that will contribute towards a possible future human mission. I'll read through the Science Definition Team's report this week and provide a more detailed analysis later this week. In the meantime, Casey Drier at the Planetary Society Live Blogged the press conference. The 154-page document was prepared by the Mars 2020 Science Definition Team, which NASA appointed in January to outline scientific objectives for the mission. John Grunsfeld, NASA's associate administrator for science in Washington. NASA will conduct an open competition for the payload and science instruments. They will be placed on a rover similar to Curiosity, which landed on Mars almost a year ago.
