Land rovers are Eco cars! A lot has been said about 4x4鈥檚 and how unfriendly they are to the environment and it got me thinking about Land Rovers and other 4x4鈥檚 I have owned and what Eco is all about. Firstly a rant, there is no doubt the new 4x4鈥檚 are recyclable and do perhaps 45mpg on a run with the wind behind them and that Toyota Electric cars are the way forward? I can鈥檛 help but thinking this is not what an Eco car is about. I own and have owned a 4x4 now for a number of years, not continually but probably 14 out of my 29 years of driving. In that time I have driven nurses and doctors to work during bad weather, pulled endless BMW鈥檚 and Mercedes out of 1cm of snow (Audi are a lot better). I have enjoyed driving my Nissan Patrol, Land Rover Discovery and Daihatsu Fourtrak off road and done all the bad things Eco people moan about 4x4鈥檚 owners like doing, for example 5 people and 3 dogs in one car.
Between the 2015 Nissan Pathfinder鈥檚 tendency to rattle, its bottom-rung transmission, and cheap build quality, it was no surprise it ended up on the Consumer Reports list for least reliable cars of the year. After nearly three years on the road, owners confirmed Pathfinder鈥檚 poor overall performance for the J.D. Power ratings. The only positive feedback it could manage came in the category of features and accessories. Next: This Volvo crossover scored poorly in everything from powertrain to interior technology. The only area where it rated average was interior/body dependability. Next: This Mitsubishi SUV received bad feedback in nearly every survey. From a tech and accessory standpoint, Mitsubishi Outlander Sport got higher-than-average ratings. However, its poor powertrain and body integrity ratings pulled it all the way down. Terrible owner satisfaction ratings for the same model from Consumer Reports suggests Outlander Sport is one to avoid on the used market 鈥?especially the 鈥?5 edition. Next: Only one compact non-luxury SUV managed to get the worst rating for the 2015 model year. Compact SUVs might have the toughest competition of any segment these days.
LAS VEGAS-Jaguar Land Rover CIO Simon Bolton discussed the automaker鈥檚 approach to digital transformation, including a focus on the move toward electric and autonomous vehicles, as well as making sense of the massive amount of data the company collects. Bolton told Dell EMC SVP of Global Communications Stella Low that 鈥渂eing CIO in an automotive company at the moment is a fascinating place to be,鈥?during a media session at Dell EMC World. As to the increasing introduction of automated systems into vehicles, Bolton said, 鈥淏y 2020, 2021, we鈥檇 expect to see significant autonomous capabilities in cars. With this move comes the need for workforce transformation. Bolton said the company 鈥渋s traditionally a mechanical engineering company. We make parts, we make a physical product. But, increasingly, that physical product is becoming a digital product. That鈥檚 a competency we鈥檙e having to create in the company. We鈥檙e working on building that capability to do that. Over the years Jaguar Land Rover has engaged in several IoT-related initiatives including a cool pilot in Coventry that blends IoT with smart city applications. Imagine driving along and hitting a pothole. Most of us make a face then forget about the pothole until it鈥檚 either fixed or we hit the same patch of road again. With its MagneRide platform, in-vehicle sensors will record the location and severity of a pothole or other road hazard - misaligned drain or manhole covers, for instance - and push that data into a cloud-based computing platform. From there, the data is available in real time to other connected cars so drivers can avoid making the same mistake, as well as to local street repair authorities to help identify and prioritize maintenance.
