2019 Land Rover Discovery 4

2019 Land Rover Discovery 4

All diesel models are now fitted with a DPF and have an advanced EGR system to reduce NOx. The remarkable ZF 8HP70 transmission delivers unrivalled response for driving pleasure while driving fuel consumption and CO2 emissions down to an all-time low. Eight speeds provide closer ratios and a greater overall ratio spread, while the higher overdrive ratio compliments the huge torque of the 3.0 LR-SDV6, reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Efficiency is further improved by the internal mechanical layout of the 8HP70 which means that no more than two internal clutches are open at any one time. The 8HP70 is packed with energy saving features. The hydraulic actuating system is more efficient too, the hydraulic pump drawing less energy from the engine. The torque converter is calibrated to lock-up at lower speeds and operating temperature, reducing fuel consumption and once again taking advantage of the 3.0-litre diesel engine's immense low-end torque. Transmission Idle Control seamlessly and transparently selects neutral when the car is stationary and the engine idling in drive, reducing drag on the engine and saving fuel.

Cleaned out the carb, and replaced the gaskets or anything that looked worn (which wasn't that much). All the jets looked good. The small ball for the the starter valve was missing, and I've ordered one. That was about it. View here shows the parts changed. The brown powder was the dirt found in the float chamber. Took the rear left wheel off, to have an initial look at the hub and well. Pretty much as expected, and lots to do! Note the springs, held together with metal straps, all of which appear to be pulling apart. Glad I have new springs. Just a closer look at the hub. The driveshaft is in perfect shape (pulled it out and had a look), and the parts here do not appear to have suffered the same abuse as those at the front hub. A view of the well, looking aft. And a look over at the other side. Prop shaft and axle casing look in good shape externally, encased in that oily dirt that protects so well. While in the garage tonight, had an unexpected vistor. Found him semi-conscious on the paper towel next to the front axle case, shivering. Probably not the smartest thing I've ever done, but brought the heater down to warm him up, gave him a piece of bread and something to drink. Took a while, but he came around and then ate the entire piece of bread, and later drank a lot of water. Didn't show any fear, even as I continued to work on the Land Rover. Last I saw of him, he was sitting on the flange of the axle casing.

This unibody construction, and the use of independent suspension front and rear, are the biggest departures from Defender tradition. The exterior design is thoroughly modern, but packed with clear references to the original. Two drivetrains will be available in the US. A 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder gasoline engine, dubbed P300, kicks out 296 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque, with a manufacturer-claimed 0-60 time of 7.7 seconds. The upgrade P400 engine is a 3.0-liter gasoline inline-six, boosted by a turbocharger and an electric supercharger and aided by a mild hybrid system using a 48-volt lithium-ion battery and a belt-integrated starter motor. Total output for the P400 mild hybrid system is 395 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque, with manufacturer-claimed 0-60 times of 5.7 seconds. The only available transmission is the industry-familiar ZF eight-speed torque-converter automatic. The Defender also gets a new brake-by-wire setup that Land Rover says can reach full braking pressure in half the time required by a conventional hydraulic setup. All Defender models feature permanent four-wheel drive via an electronically-shifted two-speed transfer case with a 2.93:1 low range.
