All Car History Volume 11

LAND ROVER DEFENDER - a four-wheel drive off-road utility vehicle available with a variety of body types, often used in agricultural, industrial and military roles, Increasingly, the Defender is being used as a private car. LAND ROVER DISCOVERY - an on and off-road four-wheel drive vehicle, the Discovery is the most popular Land Rover model and is now in its third generation. LAND ROVER FREELANDER - currently in its second generation, the Freelander is a compact crossover SUV. Launched in 1997, it quickly became the best selling compact 4x4 in Europe. LAND ROVER RANGE ROVER - a full size luxury four-wheel SUV, the Range Rover has been in production since 1970 undergoing a wide range of changes in three different generations. LAND ROVER RANGE ROVER SPORT - A sports - rather than off-road - orientated SUV. Early Land Rovers were constructed of a lightweight rustproof alloy of aluminium and magnesium called Birmabright which was used due to post war steel shortages and the plentiful supply of post-war aircraft aluminum. Birmabright's resistance to rust helped them build a reputation for being long-lasting even in the toughest conditions. In fact, it is estimated that around 75% of all Land Rovers ever built are still in use.

The design provides a 0.8-inch bump in rear knee room, a larger glove box and center console and a 6 percent increase in luggage space behind the rear seat (now at 21.54 cubic feet). The wider layout of the cargo area gives the new Evoque 50.5 cubic feet of space when the 40/20/40 rear seat is folded down. The Range Rover Evoque鈥檚 trademark styling cues, including its angled roof, rising beltline and sweeping greenhouse, remain on the all-new 2020 version. An ultra-clean profile hides new, recessed door handles and smoothed wheel arches, giving the latest Evoque one of the purest silhouettes on the road. This approach carries through to the front and back, where slim LED head- and taillights reflect the SUV鈥檚 minimalist, high-tech vibe. The Evoque鈥檚 all-new chassis was developed with electrification in mind. A traditional 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder turbo, offering 246 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque, is joined by Land Rover鈥檚 first hybrid drivetrain.

A number of clever design features include the industry-first, torque-actuated variable camshaft timing on all four cams. Unlike conventional systems which rely on oil pressure, these are actuated by the positive and negative torques generated by the opening and closing of the valves, reducing energy consumption. Cam profile switching (CPS) selects either a profile suitable for low speed running or another which gives increased lift for high performance. This provides the Discovery 4 with exceptional low-end torque to negotiate demanding terrain and allows it to become fleet of foot when conditions allow. Torque and power is also optimised by a variable inlet manifold which changes the length of its eight inlet tracts. The manifold switches between a 680mm inlet tract to provide high torque at low revs and a 350mm inlet path allowing maximum power at high revs. The precise position is optimised throughout the rev range at all times.

The Defender gets a retro touch combining old-school charm with modern bits. According to a leaked spec sheet, the SUV will come in three body styles. Three diesel, two petrol and one PHEV powertrain options are expected. 2020 Defender is set to be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The 25th installment of the long-standing James Bond movie, No Time To Die, is scheduled to be released in April next year. If you're wondering why we are talking about the next 007 movie, it鈥檚 because it will feature the next-gen version of the iconic Land Rover Defender. An image of the SUV wearing no camouflage whatsoever has now been leaked online from the sets of the movie. It seems that the wait was well worth it. The new Defender looks like it borrows various styling cues from its predecessors. The butch appeal is still present, but in a more polished package.
