Car Review: Land Rover Discovery

Car Review: Land Rover Discovery

It鈥檚 a brave move, changing the face of the Middle East鈥檚 favourite car - the Land Rover. It has shed its rugged, boxy, high-riding look with wide-opening single tailgate for a sleeker, lower and rounded shape. The overhaul of the Discovery is the biggest in its 28-year history, both cosmetically and - thanks to a brace of new electronic driver and off-road aids - under the skin as well. From the front it鈥檚 now got the characteristic Range Rover nose and even diehard fans are accepting this, albeit begrudgingly. However, things change once your eyes move past the C-Pillar and around to the rear. Here it鈥檚 decidedly softer and carries over a trait from earlier iterations - the stepped hipline around the back. Reflected as an off set licence plate positioning, this gives the impression of wearing an eye patch and for obsessive compulsives out there, the lack of symmetry can be a little hard to take. However, most Land Rover owners are loyal to the brand not because of what it looks like, but what it can do.

I Want a Land Rover Defender Now! We鈥檝e waited this long for a new Defender, but we still have to wait a bit longer. The Defender 110 four-door model will hit the U.S. We鈥檒l have to wait even longer for the diesel and electric variants. Will the 2020 Land Rover Defender live up to the iconic nameplate it carries? Only time will tell. I bet we鈥檒l see an update in less than 43 years this time, though. And I can鈥檛 wait to see what the future holds for this impressive vehicle. I also can鈥檛 wait for it to hit the used market so that I can afford one! The off-road SUV market in the U.S. Jeep Wrangler, the reliable Toyota 4Runner, and the regal Mercedes G-Wagon. The Defender slots in between the G-Wagon and the rest in terms of price but above them all in many ways. It really sets itself apart from the competition with more hauling capability 鈥?more payload (up to 1,984 pounds), more towing (up to 8,201 pounds), more cargo space, and more passenger seating (up to eight people).

Land Rover enhanced some optional tech features for 2017. The most noteworthy change relates to 2018 and newer models, which come with better engines than the older editions. The refreshed Land Rover Discovery Sport is expected to go on sale in the Summer with prices likely reflecting those of current models. The mild-hybrid-assisted models will likely command a slightly higher price tag, however. Now that the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport lineups are seriously beginning to show their age, the British automaker has decided to pull an ace out of its sleeve. The new P400e plug-in hybrid versions of the aged SUVs are a welcome addition to an already extensive lineup of Land Rover鈥檚 flagship models. The hybrid Range Rovers are just the beginning of the forthcoming powertrain revolution in JLR which will introduce a full EV model in the coming years. For now, however, we鈥檒l have to be content with a low-twenties mpg when it comes to fuel economy. The conventional lineup鈥檚 turbo-diesel option is still the efficiency leader with up to 26 miles to the gallon combined.
