An alternative might be to fly the sample cache mission in 2018 and the Jupiter Europa mission in 2020 (hopefully with their ESA counterparts). 6-7B between the two missions, leaving room for a couple of New Frontiers and Discovery missions. The majority of the remaining funds needed for the subsequent sample return elements would come from the following decade's budget. It's easy to be an armchair mission planner. There may be many reasons why this possiblity may be infeasible or unwise and there may be better alternatives. The Decadal Survey may also conclude that it wants to recommend just one (or no) multi-billion dollar missions in the coming decade, eliminating the competition. However, I have not seen a discussion of the question of whether or not results from the 2018 caching mission should be known before committing to the next sample return element. I hope that the Decadal Survey will consider that question as it reportedly is considering whether to recommend either or both of these two large missions.

Have you had an oil pump fail on a 2000-2004 Land Rover V8? At Robison Service, we are seeing pump failure more and more. Last week we encountered a 2003 Discovery with a failure I have not seen before. The car came to us with an oil light on most of the time, and lifter noise when the light was on. The noise vanished as soon as the light went out, confirming that the car has a problem with oil pressure, and not a problem with the oil light sender. This engine is reasonably clean, and free of sludge. This wasn't a neglect issue. We removed the front cover, and found the oil pump fractured. I have seen several similar failures in the past year, but most of the time, when we get them, the engine has already blown. This one had not. The outer gear of the pump had fractured into four pieces.

Answering these questions can require devilishly subtle measurements. On Earth with the best instruments available (far, far more capable than those that could be flown to another planet), concrete answers are hard to come by and debates rage about the earliest conditions on Earth. The Mars scientific community has collectively decided that the best and perhaps only way to answer these questions is to return carefully collected samples to Earth for study in terrestrial laboratories. Placement of the just announced instruments on the 2020 rover. To see how the instruments selected will work together towards this goal, imagine that you were sent to Mars and given the assignment to select a small set of samples to return to Earth. Because you can return only a few samples, you are under pressure to find those few special samples that can best reveal insights into the earliest history of Mars. The first thing you are likely to do is to look to see what types of terrain and rock formations surround you.
