Future Planetary Exploration
The solar occultation FTIR spectrometer uses the bright light of the sun to detect trace gases in the atmosphere. Both of these missions would forgo the high resolution camera (and the near polar orbit that would optimize global surface imaging at the expense of an optimized distribution of solar occulations). The issue for carrying a high resolution camera is not just the cost of the camera. The camera requires an ultra-stable platform (no jittering of the camera allowed!), precise pointing capabilities, significant data storage, and a hefty communications system to send the data back to Earth. The 2007 reported noted, 鈥淯nfortunately, achieving spatial resolution of 5-10 cm, under current state of the art, increases both mass and cost significantly, and largely becomes the only scientific goal for MSO. Also, spacecraft stability could become the limiting factor in resolution rather than the telescope.鈥?Lower resolutions (even 1 M) bring similar problems. The MEPAG presentation doesn鈥檛 list costs for MSO-min or MSO-lite. 480M. It seems reasonable to assume that this represents a base cost estimate for an MSO mission with each additional goal met perhaps driving the cost incrementally higher. With the discovery of methane in the Martian atmosphere, MSO is likely to be a high priority. MEPAG may have a difficult time deciding when to recommend its flight. 400M to ESA鈥檚 2016 ExoMars rover. If it does, it seems unlikely that it will have funds to fly MSO in the same launch opportunity. In that case, it may be 2018 or 2020 before MSO launches.
You will need to substitute kettle for Cote Du Rhone for us that night, we decided to have some red before bed. I think we were setup a whole 30-60 minutes before the new campers and we were eating our grub. It was early, but the tent was warm, so we did not get out into the cold around the camp fire, it was getting windy and we decided to crash, so I put the radio on and snoozed. Rachel stuffed her spare clothes at the end of her sleeping bag to ensure in the morning they were not damp a good idea if you鈥檙e not 6鈥?1鈥? Mine however were in a bag. There are only two types of wind in camping, natural wind and food powered. This night it was proper windy, the weather forecast of -2c and 50mph winds were for once bang on. Now any hardened camper will tell you the very 1st time you camp out in bad weather you think you are going to die or the tent is going to take of and fly away with you in it.
I was happy to see that the original equipment I pulled out of my car (dated September 2006) was also a BEHR part with exactly the same part number. Unfortunately, I don't think there is any way to test the part out of the car. Resistance measured across the terminals of the "bad" part pulled from my 2007 S80 was identical to the values I measured on the new part. It is possible that my fiddling with the connections, and reconnecting the battery twice, with different sequences of key position/start/etc., is all that was needed. Obviously, I'm leaving the new part in there. If you're wondering why I'm writing this in a land rover forum, there are so many common parts between the Volvo P3 cars like the S80 II and the Freelander/LR2, it's shocking. I'm working my way through a list of problems with this car. I believe several of these problems are probably common to the Freelander/LR2.
In other words - if you travel by plane, you don't get to look down on Hummer drivers. A single round-trip intercontinental flight more than negates an entire year's worth of commuting by bicycle. 47,000) and so we don't think twice about spending it frivolously, from household doo-dahs to vacations. And this segues me nicely into my next topic. The idea that in order to be a well rounded individual, to understand different perspectives, and be truly educated, worldly and insightful you have to travel is a form of elitism. It is essentially saying "if you have not had the opportunities I've had, you can not possibly be quite at my level. There is a form of insight I have which you never will". It is a form of hubris. When we send aid to small villages we are saying in a way: "You need help. You can't take care of yourself. We know the right way for you to do things". We Americans, wealthy and young and educated (and mostly white) come to offer you poor things some charity and advice.
