Land Rover鈥檚 clever electronic switchgear, in which most of the front dash is actually a touch-screen, offers a simple look that almost disappears into nothing when the vehicle is not running, but lights up when the starter button is pressed. Two large knobs do double-duty as adjustments for the temperature, the fan and the various drive modes, while a central touch-screen controls most everything else. The digital gauge cluster can be customized to the driver's liking. The third row of seats is cramped and won't be comfortable for most adults.
Land Rover will bring the redesigned Defender SUV to the United States as its entry-level vehicle, said Ralf Speth, CEO of Jaguar Land Rover. The Defender could debut as early as 2015 and will be based on the DC100 concept shown at the 2011 Frankfurt auto show. The rugged Defender is currently sold in overseas markets and was last sold here in 1997."We will make sure it will be a vehicle for the U.S.," Speth said. 41,995, including shipping. It is one of several new products Land Rover and Jaguar, which are both owned by India's Tata Motors, are developing as part of a global growth strategy. Jaguar is expected to launch a small sedan to compete with the Mercedes-Benz C-class and BMW 3-series in two to three years. For 2013, the Ford Escape is completely redesigned. Antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, front-seat side airbags, a driver knee airbag and full-length curtain-type airbags are all standard on the 2013 Ford Escape. Up front in the cabin the Escape provides a pair of well-shaped, generously padded seats that ensure proper comfort and support. Materials and overall fit and finish are excellent. The gauges are large and easily read. But while most controls are intuitive, those for the climate system are awkwardly located, down low and in front of the gear selector. Ford has also worked to improve the latest version of MyFord Touch -- it works well, though there's still a learning curve involved. As before, there's plenty of room inside the Escape, even in the rear seat, which has plenty of head- and legroom. The wide front seats are generously padded, with good bolstering for the seatback.
