A Few Things Come To Mind
A few things come to mind. Firstly, the winch is excellent. Secondly, the alpine windows are still there! Thirdly, the rear passenger door looks massive 鈥?you鈥檒l never open that in a Tesco car park! Fourthly, there seems to be quite a bit of wheel clearance (though it鈥檚 unknown if this is standard height, off road height, or on coils!). Fifthly, checker on the bonnet (yes, the bonnet is a funny shape and there is no real wing to speak of). Sixthly, I鈥檓 not sure about the mirrors at all. Not surprisingly, having already seen camouflaged prototypes, the new-generation Defender retains the boxy looks of its predecessor. Much like Mercedes-Benz did with the G-Class, Land Rover intends to keep its Defender fanbase by offering a new-generation SUV that remains true to the iconic shape. Of course, the new Defender looks decidedly more modern and some familiar elements are gone, but the overall shape and vibe are still there. In the front, Land Rover ditched the old-school, individual bumpers and the big, rectangular grille, but kept the position of the them almost intact.

The trailer's drive shaft passes down the centre of this fitting which must articulate relative to the trailer. A yoke on the trailer allows 60 degrees of movement in pitch and yaw and 360 degrees in roll (not recommended). Land-Rover conducted various experiments with powered trailers using simpler, more conventional tow bars which had more restricted movements but they were felt to be insufficiently "soldier proof". The drive shaft must contain one or more joints to allow for changes in angularity between the 101 and the trailer. Twin universal joints are used. Taken together, these effectively form a constant velocity joint which would be important at large angles of deflection or high speeds. This arrangement also allows for some "play" in the tow bar yoke. The 101 with trailer forms an articulated six wheel drive (6WD) which has some advantages over a rigid one. It is almost impossible for the unit to get "cross axled".
Literally the moment I drove out of the garage after the ignition upgrade I noticed a loud, metallic, short, hard to describe click coming from the back of the vehicle. The click occurred practically every time I reversed the car while turning 90 degrees and then pulling away forward, as you do when you drive a car out of a parking space. The click/bang/knock sound happens at the instant you pull forward after the initial reversing. After a lot of searching on the net about this problem, which is a common one for the early Freelanders, a few causes and fixes turned up for this problem. The rear subframe is attached to the chassis with four long bolts, these bolts are inserted from underneath the car and go through the subframe arms, then through a thick chassis rail. Inside the chassis rail is a square nut that holds the bolt in place.
