China Is Very Much About Growth





IHS Automotive forecasts that Chinese demand for premium SUVs will double to 1.2 million units by 2020, with 18 brands competing for market share. JLR aims to capture 10 percent of the premium SUV market with the Land Rover brand, JLR鈥檚 China boss Bob Grace, said at the Changshu factory鈥檚 opening ceremony on Monday. 1.8 billion plant is JLR鈥檚 first full-scale assembly facility outside the UK and has been built with joint venture partner Chery Automobile. JLR sold 62,479 vehicles in China in the first half, representing almost one in four of the company鈥檚 global sales. Jaguar Land Rover CEO Ralph Speth said on Monday that the carmaker plans to build three models in China by 2016, including a Jaguar. Land Rover has struggled to keep pace with huge demand for its newest products. One recent fix was to include some Range Rover Sport production on the new Jaguar XE's assembly line in Solihull, central England. JLR has installed a new press line at Halewood at a cost of 45 million pounds (57 million euros) to speed up pressing of parts ahead of the launch of the Discovery Sport. Halewood makes 80 percent of pressed steel and aluminum parts for Jaguar Land Rover鈥檚 three UK factories. JLR, owned by India鈥檚 Tata Motors, sold a record 425,006 vehicles in 2013, up 19 per cent on the year before. JLR has not denied or confirmed media reports that it is in talks to build a plant in the United States.





The Land Rover LR2 gets a thorough makeover for 2013 including a new powertrain and substantially revised interior. The Range Rover Evoque鈥檚 240-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter I-4 with 250 lb-ft of torque replaces the LR2鈥檚 naturally aspirated 3.2-liter I-6 (230 hp, 235 lb-ft). With a six-speed automatic and all-wheel drive, the LR2鈥檚 fuel mileage is EPA rated 17/24 mpg city/highway - an improvement of 2 mpg in both metrics over the outgoing engine. The intelligent permanent all-wheel-drive system features a Haldex center-coupling that uses a hydraulically operated multi-plate wet clutch to alter the front-rear torque split. Most of the engine鈥檚 power is sent to the front wheels during normal driving, but the system can quickly transfer power to the rear wheels when needed. During our First Drive, the LR2 encountered a storm on 鈥渙ur way from Montreal to Mont-Tremblant, providing us the opportunity to see how well the LR2 handled snowy pavement.
