A new entrance/exit gate as well. Very nice. Well done and compliments to Botswana鈥檚 Dept of Wild Life. You do a great job for all your parks. 鈥淧art of the adventure is a bit of risk,鈥?I鈥檓 saying to Hennie, as we get into the vehicle. When we get to the deep crossing, just past the local village of Kudumane ( Hennie steps out, strips down and crosses ahead. He sinks to chest height into the brown water. OK, a solid sandy river bed. Behind me, a Land Cruiser is parked to one side. I change to low range 1st gear and slowly cross and build up a suitable bow wave and see the water rising higher and higher. It seems to be okay until the vehicle slips even deeper and a small wave swims over the bonnet, splashing through the air vent onto the seats and me. I feel a twinge in my stomach but the Land Rover simply continues on, lifts slightly out of the water, dips down again and finally emerges.

Even today, with the Cassini and New Horizons probes furthering our understanding of objects in our solar system, we're reminded how vital these unmanned missions really are to the space program. The important distinction to make between manned and unmanned spacecraft are the lengths of their missions, the objectives they are capable of accomplishing, and the effectiveness of each mission. With every mission there is a specific result that the operators and designers are trying to accomplish. For a manned mission like the space shuttle, it may be to deliver a new module to the International Space Station, while for a rover it may be to look for samples of water ice on Mars. However, no one is sending a multimillion dollar craft into space to act as a delivery service or to dig around in the dirt and call it quits. Most missions have numerous secondary objectives, ones which aren't crucial to the outcome, but will be a bonus if accomplished.

鈥淐lass size is the great equalizer. Anybody who has children understands this. In 2003, 115,000 New York City residents signed petitions aimed at setting class size limits, and in 2005, 100,000 did. Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg has said the city cannot afford to do more now, and has successfully stalled advocates鈥?efforts in court, but at a price to children. A recent state audit shows that 26 percent of New York City children in grades K to three are in classes of 25 or more. The intent of the No Child law could not be more important 鈥?to narrow the achievement gap between white and minority children. But what angers public educators is that under the law, schools get all the blame if students fail, when they see many other variables at play, including the crippling effects of poverty on families. Studies show that the economic status of a child鈥檚 family has a major impact on a child鈥檚 performance on standardized tests.
