Watch Out, Lexus - 鈥淚 compared the ( Lincoln) MKX to Lexus, Mazda CX-9, GMC鈥檚 Acadia, and Toyota鈥檚 Highlander and found this vehicle clearly superior. The housing casting is 13-01. Your best bet for an adapter to go between the T-18 and a Series transfercase is with Advance Adapters. Contact Mathew Jackson for details. Otherwise you will need to fabricate an adapter plate and a hybrid output shaft. Oil Note: Use a GL-4 rated oil instead of GL-5. GL-5 has a higher sulphur content that is mildly corrosive to the bronze alloy syncros used in this gearbox. StaLube and RedLine are brands to look for. This is a four speed with an unsynchronized granny first gear. This strong and reliable transmission usually fitted to 3/4 ton pickups up to 2-1/2 ton trucks. Either a Ford and Chevy top cover can be used with either late case. The Ford cover is shorter but the gear throw is longer. The Chevy housing is taller with a shorter shift lever throw. You will likely have to shorten and rebend the stock shift leaver to fit. My NP-435 consists of a Ford housing and Chevy close ratio gear set. The term close ratio is relevant though.
Many of today鈥檚 cars use special coolants that have additives to protect the various metals and plastics in modern engines. In our shop, we鈥檝e learned to use BMW coolant in BMW cars, and Jaguar coolant in Jaguars. If you drive a late model import it almost surely takes special coolant. I suggest you follow the manufacturer recommendations in this area because I鈥檝e seen the wrong coolant cause leaks, clogs, and even overheating failures. The coolant reservoir for the engine usually has a screw-on lid and it鈥檚 filled with green coolant in older cars. In newer vehicles the coolant can be yellow, red, or dark blue. Don鈥檛 confuse those two liquids! In the picture above I'm pointing to the washer reservoir. The coolant reservoir is to the right. We don鈥檛 pay much attention to our car鈥檚 heater during summer, but we鈥檒l be needing heat any day now. In a modern car, a weak or inoperative heater is usually a sign of other problem, like low coolant or a stuck thermostat. The final thing to check is your tires. Where I live we fit snow tires, and this is the time to be doing that. In other areas people use the same tires year round, but it鈥檚 important to make sure you have good tread. Remember that a tire can wear unevenly, so it looks good on the outside edge but the inside or center is totally bald. Don鈥檛 be fooled by tire trickery!
