2019 Land Rover Defender Debuts Today
Three and a half years have passed since Land Rover discontinued the original Defender after 68 years of continuous production, but now the off-road icon is ready to make a comeback to rival the Mercedes G-Class. It鈥檚 been teased to death, yet we鈥檙e still eager to find out what JLR has been cooking up over the past few years. Land Rover actually kicked off the teaser campaign for a new-era Defender way back in 2011 with the DC100 concept, so it鈥檚 safe to say the all-new model has been a long time in the making. From what we know so far, there will be the usual three-door 90 and five-door 110 body styles, with recent intel suggesting these will be joined by a bigger 130 model with up to eight seats. The next generation of the iconic British SUV will represent a significant departure from its predecessor in terms of technology as it will adopt the latest toys.
To stand out from the pack, a vehicle has to top the Toyota RAV4, Subaru Forester, Mazda CX-5, and Honda CR-V. Not only did the 2015 Jeep Cherokee fail on that front; it didn鈥檛 even come close to competing. The Cherokee鈥檚 subpar powertrain, cheap finish, and other imperfections made it the only complete flop in the compact SUV category. Next: Used car shoppers have been warned repeatedly about this Jeep. The previous-generation Jeep Compass (2007-16) was widely known as a lemon. Owners complained about its dull acceleration, noisy cabin, shoddy brakes, poor visibility, and crappy finish. It received the worst owner-satisfaction scores for every year of its existence. After three years in J.D. Power owners鈥?hands, the verdict as no different: The 2015 Compass is the least dependable small SUV on the road. Next: It basically didn鈥檛 get worse than this Range Rover. Only two models got the worst possible ratings in powertrain, body integrity, and interior accessories. 41,800, was one of them in the J.D. Consumers probably expect more from the Land Rover and Range Rover brands, but this model is yet another entry-level luxury model that hasn鈥檛 delivered. Next: If you鈥檙e in the market for three-year-old SUV, this Audi might be your worst choice. The 2015 Audi Q7 joined the Range Rover Evoque with the worst scores of any SUV in the J.D. Power rankings. Initial Quality ratings for Q7 did not bode well for this model, and owners didn鈥檛 get any happier with it once three years passed. Complaints revolved around shoddy brakes, excess engine noise, and a clumsy in-car electronics system. 50,000 and still commands high prices used, consumers should take note.

The first conception of Evoque came off a little too small and a little too flattened around the edges to stand up like a true Range Rover. It looked a little bit like a pretender in the royal family. The new lines and angles of Evoque put it properly in line with the rest of the esteemed clan. With the wheels pushed out to the corners of the frame for maximum balance and minimal unsprung weight, the change in appearance is as practical as it is visually appealing. The ride never disappoints, whether cruising on a Grecian highway or tearing down moderately challenging off-road stretches. This may not be the best Range Rover for rocking over boulders, but it can handle dirt and mud with aplomb. The hybrid version of the R-Dynamic Evoque trim package includes a 2.0 liter turbo four-cylinder engine with intertwined hybrid technology. The total package offers 296 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. If moving under 11 mph, the Evoque PHEV can deactivate the engine and run entirely on battery power, making the machine a fully electric vehicle for short hauls. Don鈥檛 think the use of that term 鈥渟hort haul鈥?will prove mandatory in the evolving plug-in and hybrid world. As technology improves across the automotive industry, car buyers will only see longer runs and all types of driving ranging from the practical to the theatrical further improved transformed by electricity.
Taniya and Clive are currently heading South from the UK and have a good website with excellent photos and videos. Peter Strong bought a fully kitted Camel Trophy Discovery and headed South and eventually North again. The Camel. 300TDi Discovery (P244 KAC) that was factory built for the Mongolia Camel Trophy Competition in 1997. I found the Camel in the care of Simon Pitchford in Gibraltar. Simon was gutted to lose one of his favourite toys - I was delighted to find a vehicle that was capable of taking the journey on. Colin and team headed South from the UK in a Discovery. Launched in 1998, the Discovery II was the first vehicle to use the new 5-cylinder diesel engine (TD5) plus the new 'fly-by-wire' electronics which controlled fuel injection, traction control, and Active Cornering Enhancement (ACE) which prevented body roll. Paul and Jacinda headed North in their TD5 - their website offers an excellent vehicle prep page, including updates on equipment used.
