2019 Land Rover LR2 Preview

2019 Land Rover LR2 Preview

Pros: The 2015 Land Rover LR2 is the company's entry-level SUV, yet it provides superb comfort, a quiet interior, and exceptional off-road capability. The new 4-cylinder engine is lighter, more advanced, more powerful, and more fuel-efficient. Residual value remains high. Cons: On the other hand, reliability is still an issue, and some will not like the amount of plastic inside, especially for the price. 2015 Land Rover LR2 Fuel Economy: Based on Natural Resources Canada's new 5-cycle testing procedure to determine fuel consumption ratings, expect to burn 13.5L/100km in the city and 9.9L/100km on the highway with your LR2. Improvements and Changes: There are no changes for 2015. Next year, the LR2 will bow out and the all-new Discovery Sport will take its place. 2015 Land Rover LR2 Powertrain: Just like the Range Rover Evoque, the 2.0L 4-cylinder turbocharged engine under the hood of the LR2 produces a healthy 240 horsepower along with 250 lb-ft of torque. It's mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission with manual mode and all-wheel drive system featuring Land Rover's acclaimed Terrain Response technology. Cargo Capacity: The LR2's trunk can hold up to 755 litres of gear. However, you can get as much as 1,670 litres when you fold the rear seats. Safety: The 2015 Land Rover LR2 comes standard with seven airbags, ABS, brake assist, electronic brake force distribution, hill descent control, traction control, and stability control with rollover mitigation. Comparing the 2015 Land Rover LR2: In the entry-level luxury SUV/CUV segment, you'll also find the Mercedes-Benz GLK, BMW X3, and Audi Q5. None are more competent off the beaten path than the Landie, of course.

For MX-5 models between 1998-2005 the magazine comments: 鈥淭he Mazda MX-5 is the automotive equivalent of a double espresso. Jaguar Land Rover debuts an all-new, hybridized 3.0-liter inline-six engine. The engine benefits from both turbocharging and an electrically powered supercharger, as well as a 48-volt electrical system. For now, the 395-hp engine is being installed in a U.K. Range Rover Sport, but it likely will spread to other vehicles and other markets soon. We knew Jaguar Land Rover was planning on adding an inline-six engine to its budding family of modern Ingenium engines, which until now has consisted entirely of four-cylinder gas and diesel options. But we didn't realize the 3.0-liter straight-six would be so high-tech: This turbocharged engine is supported by a 48-volt electrical system, which powers an electric supercharger and an electric motor. Whoa. That makes the new Ingenium inline-six, at least in the configuration Land Rover is debuting it in, a hybridized mill with traditional turbocharging and electric supercharging. If this setup sounds familiar, it's because Mercedes-AMG's new E53 models have a very similar arrangement (right down to their inline-six engines). Jaguar Land Rover says the electric supercharger sharpens the engine's throttle response, as it can spin up to its 65,000-rpm peak within half a second. That masks any turbo lag that might crop up from the turbocharger between the time the driver presses the gas pedal and the engine responds. The hybrid bits and 48-volt system enable extended periods of fuel-saving engine-off scenarios when, say, the vehicle is stopped at a red light or in traffic. For now, the new engine is available only in a special-edition Land Rover Range Rover Sport HST model (pictured here) in the U.K. But look for the powerful new engine to make its way into other Land Rover, Range Rover, and Jaguar products around the world soon. More details, including performance estimates and fuel economy benefits, likely will land closer to the six-cylinder's arrival in North America.

Credit the engine鈥檚 torque curve and the transmission鈥檚 shifting algorithm. With the pedal to the floorboard (such as while passing slower traffic on a rural road), the transmission (eventually) downshifts multiple gears and rockets the engine speed toward redline. Yet, in relaxed freeway passing, the nine-speed only keeps the four-pot in the meaty part of its rev range. The Evoque has plenty of usable power for patient drivers. My only other complaint focuses on the 2.0-liter engine鈥檚 jumpy off-road throttle response. Its off-road drive modes are supposed to dull the throttle response to help drivers modulate their inputs, but the 2020 Evoque鈥檚 modes don鈥檛 go far enough, and caused me to approach or exit certain obstacles too suddenly. Locking the transmission into second gear, as I did, solved the problem mostly, since it grants a wider range of throttle modulation. The Range Rover Evoque still has more off-road capability than its typical owner will need in a dozen lifetimes. That small problem aside, the Range Rover Evoque still has more off-road capability than its typical owner will need in a dozen lifetimes.
