Nevertheless, the new Defender is also much more road-focused than its predecessor thanks to independent suspension front and rear. Two body styles will be available at launch: the three-door, short-wheelbase Defender 90 and five-door, standard-wheelbase Defender 110. A long-wheelbase Defender 130 with up to eight seats is expected to join the lineup late next year. There will also be two powertrains available at launch. The base unit is 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 with 296 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, and above this sits a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6 mild-hybrid with 395 hp and 406 lb-ft. The 0-60 mph time for the more powerful option is under 6.0 seconds. The sole transmission is an 8-speed automatic which is coupled to a 2-speed transfer box and a permanent four-wheel-drive system as standard. For superior off-roading capability, the new Defender sits about 0.8 inches higher than other Land Rover SUVs, resulting in ground clearance of 11.5 inches. Approach, breakover and departure angles come in at 38, 28 and 40 degrees, respectively.
I wandered into the dealership one day as I set out to cross-shop various cars and was greeted by the salesperson JOE SERIO. He went over all the details very patiently and made sure I did not feel intimidated during the process. His ability to explain things in a manner this very technically-challenged person can actually understand was incredibly helpful, not at all intimidating, and very much appreciated. In addition, Tyler's friendly and easy-going nature made the experience really fun overall. If you are in the market for a Jaguar or a Range Rover, do not hesitate to visit this dealership--and BE SURE to ask for Joe Serio and Tyler Wilson, as they are simply "the best" as what they do! This place is a joke, too bad zero is not an option. I made an online appointment that took three weeks to get. Absolutely LOVED working with Joe Serio here in Austin and so in love with my F-Pace ride!
The Curiosity rover can detect organic materials through its mass spectrometer, but preparing samples for and using this instrument is a laborious process and has only been done rarely in the mission to date. In addition, the way the Curiosity鈥檚 instrument works, it must heat samples, which triggers chemical reactions with the perchlorates found in the soils, destroying the organic materials. Careful measurements have allowed scientists to conclude that the samples taken by Curiosity contain some organic materials, but we aren鈥檛 sure how much or what types. By using lasers, the 2020 rover can find organics quickly and won鈥檛 be skunked by perchlorates, key advantages over Curiosity. Two other instruments round out the 2020 rover鈥檚 manifest. The MEDA instrument, supplied by Spain, will monitor the weather and study the airborne dust. MOXIE will demonstrate the extraction of oxygen from the predominantly carbon dioxide atmosphere at Mars. Missions (manned or unmanned) that are to return to Earth could substantially reduce their launch weight if they could manufacture the oxidizer portion of their rocket fuel form the Martian air.
An all-new BMW 3 Series looks likely to be the biggest story of the Paris Motor Show. Under the bodywork it'll switch to BMW's lightweight CLAR platform, enabling new-generation and alternative powertrains to be fitted. As such, a fully electric variant of the next 3 Series is in the pipeline, though it probably won't be at Paris. Alongside it, we'll get to see the new X5 SUV and Z4 roadster for the first time in public as well. DS will add a second SUV to its line-up at its home show in Paris, sitting beneath the flagship DS 7 Crossback. It'll be called the DS 3 Crossback, and will rival the likes of the MINI Countryman and Audi Q2. Making use of the PSA group's new CMP platform, it'll also be ready for electrification. To showcase this and to really make a statement, DS looks set to take the wraps off a purely electric DS 3 Crossback at Paris, using a modified version of the platform called e-CMP. Peugeot's stylish new 508 will be bolstered on two fronts with the full public debut of the 508 SW, plus the arrival of plug-in hybrid versions of the firm's flagship D-segment offering. The 508 SW rivals the Skoda Superb Estate and the Vauxhall Insignia Sports Tourer and Prices and specs will be revealed at Paris along with full details of the PHEV model's range and performance. Skoda's vRS performance brand will release its take on the Kodiaq SUV. Skoda has been testing the Kodiaq vRS at the Nurburgring, setting the lap record for a seven-seat SUV in the process. Power will come from a twin-turbocharged 2.0-litre diesel offering 237bhp, while prices in the UK will likely just eclipse 拢40,000. What are you most looking forward to seeing at the 2018 Paris Motor Show?
