That evening, at camp, Hennie hauls out his UV torch and yellow glasses to shield his eyes. It does not take him long to find several scorpions in cracks in old tree stumps. Most species glow in the dark like neon lights. Amazing. Hennie tells me that even fossils of scorpions do this. Very early the next morning, at around 5am, Hennie watches four honey badgers enter camp, sniffing around. These are very single-minded, very brave animals for their size. They eat snakes, lizards and mice and if a lion or human is unwise enough to attack one of them, they lunge for your soft spots, I believe. 鈥淎nd you know where that is,鈥?Hennie says. We have our usual rusks and coffee for breakfast. And as usual at this time of the year hornbills share the fare. Hennie raises his eyebrows when I feed the birds. We live so apart from nature that to commune with them is a heart warming experience.

At the same time as we feel superior, we also feel good about ourselves for having been so generous. We generally tend to come away with a new perspective on our own culture - namely, that not everything we do in our own society is the only, nor necessarily "best" way to do things. Other places are more community oriented, less money driven, less stressed. Love and marriage are seen differently, the role of family is different, the role of government is different. And as often as not, having experienced a few months, maybe a year, of this alternative culture, we romanticize it, deciding it is ideal and failing to acknowledge any of the problems that it had. Focus on some culture other than ones own is still just as much a form of ethnocentrism. The most common examples I see are everything which is lumped under the broad category "Eastern" and "Native". Eastern really means "traditional eastern"; today countries in Asia have things like surgery and drugs to treat people, just like we have here.

This is our first official look at the next Range Rover Evoque. The British brand is gearing up for the launch of its second-generation compact SUV by creating a fleet of scale wire sculptures that have been dotted around the capital. The covers will officially come off the new Evoque on 22 November and Land Rover will begin taking orders on the same day. Prices are expected to start from around 拢32,000. Eight years on from the launch of the original Evoque, Land Rover is claiming the new model will set new standards 鈥渙f design, capability and sustainability鈥? Over 750,000 examples of the current model have been sold around the world so far. The sculpture indicates the new Evoque won鈥檛 undergo a dramatic redesign, sticking closely to the current car鈥檚 overall shape with the fastback roofline and slender head and tail-lamps. Our exclusive image gives you a better idea of what to expect from the showroom model, with a lot of design cues taken from the Velar. The Velar look will be particularly evident in the cabin, where spy shots have revealed the Evoque will feature the dual-screen set-up on the centre console and dash, which first appeared on its larger sibling. It鈥檚 expected to use a revised version of the current D8 platform, but the SUV will be slightly longer than before, with a stretched wheelbase giving more room inside. The platform will also be adapted to support mild-hybrid tech - JLR boss Dr Ralf Speth has said that every new product launched from 2020 will feature some form of electrification.
