The original Freelander was on sale for nearly a decade, and by the end of its life, had become comprehensively outclassed by newer rivals. However, it was still a big seller, so the off-roader clearly has a loyal fan base. It comes as no surprise, then, that Land Rover鈥檚 designers have retained the classic Freelander visuals with the latest model. As is the case with the new X-Trail, the second-generation Freelander looks familiar, and yet is more modern than its predecessor and has a chunkier profile. Cleverly, the stylists have included details such as Range Rover Sport-inspired side gills, plus bulky door handles which echo those on the Discovery. The intention here is to link the newcomer with more exclusive products in the firm鈥檚 range which, it is hoped, will help offset its high price. The cheapest model in the line-up is the 拢20,935 S, and it鈥檚 only really this poorly kitted-out version and the 拢23,435 GS that fall within the X-Trail鈥檚 direct price band. Our range-topping HSE matches the Nissan for equipment, but it costs a huge 拢30,960 - although once inside the cabin, there鈥檚 no doubt quality has taken a big step forward over the outgoing car.

An initial colour choice was set by military surplus supplies of aircraft cockpit paint, so the early vehicles were limited to certain shades of light green. All Land Rover models until recently had featured a sturdy box section ladder-frame chassis. The original launch price in the UK was 拢450. In the first year of production 3048 vehicles were produced. The first Land Rover Series I, where field-tested at Long Bennington. The Series II in was produced in 1958 and Series III in 1971 with the near identical design were these was rarely challenged in the offroad field. Land Rover introduced a second model which was added to the range: Range Rover. This was the world's first luxury 4x4. It was powered by a Rover V8, drove through by 4WD system and rode on its unique all-independent suspensions. It retained the strong off-road ability of traditional Land Rover while offering superior driving comfort and a luxury interior. The British Army maintains the use of 2.5-litre four-cylinder 300TDi-engine versions are preferred to the electronically controlled 2.5-litre five-cylinder TD5 to retain some servicing simplicity.

What sort of rock is the wall behind me made of? The next topic we will tackle in my lecture series for budding canine scientists will be geology. Now the study of rocks is best conducted outdoors. It just so happens that the North of Scotland, my home patch, is widely known as a Mecca for geologists. So in two weeks time I shall be leading a field trip and we shall visit some famous localities in the stunning landscapes of the Highlands and Islands. We can only take a small minibus down the narrow and twisty Highland roads. So before accepting your registrations I am going to ask you to complete a little task. I want you to provide some evidence - we scientists like evidence - that you are well prepared for field work in Scotland. Please feel free to use your imaginations here. All the best science students have a strong creative streak. There is no single right way to complete this exercise. Perhaps you can demonstrate a prior interest in the practical aspects of Earth Science. Perhaps you could show me that you will be able to withstand our inclement climate / possess the appropriate weatherproof clothing. Maybe you have some photos illustrating that boulders, cliffs, mountains and midges are totally your thing. A familiarity with the customs and traditions of the Scottish Highlands would be a distinct advantage. I look forward to hearing from the students who attended last Monday's class, and perhaps some new ones. And yes Stella, please do encourage Ludo to apply. I know his Mum is very busy at the moment but I think this subject will suit him down to the ground. Finally, feedback from the Thermodynamics lecture has indicated a rather regrettable obsession with the availability of 'foodables'.

It's important to keep a good battery in these type of vehicles. Any modern vehicles, especially something that runs the amount of electronics these do, having a good strong battery is an important thing to keep. And generally batteries last five years, it's about the case with these vehicles, too. But every five years, you should change your battery. But we test them on servicing, and nothing fails prematurely. But electrically speaking, these cars are pretty good, and I know in the past, Land Rovers, Jaguars, had a bad reputation, the Lucas wiring systems. Mark: They were a lot of fun. Bernie: Yes. Yeah, there was a lot of problems, but that's long, ancient history. It's like we're talking about a different kind of car. Mark: So there you go. If you're looking for service in Vancouver, BC, Canada for your Jaguar, the guys to see are Pawlik Automotive. You have to call and book ahead, they're busy. All makes, models, types of repairs, maintenance issues, tips, et cetera. Many years now doing this. And as well, of course, we really appreciate you watching the podcasts and listening and thanks, Bernie. Bernie: Thanks, Mark. Thanks for watching.
