Is Jaguar Land Rover Really Looking To Buy A New Luxury Brand?
Jaguar Land Rover is looking at the acquisition of a new luxury or technology brand, according to a Bloomberg report posted online. A JLR spokesperson denied the rumours, but didn鈥檛 rule out opportunities in the future. The Bloomberg article suggests Jaguar Land Rover is already in talks with several manufacturers. The one parameter is, allegedly, that the chosen brand must fit JLR鈥檚 current portfolio of luxury vehicles, which alone make up a huge 78 per cent of parent company Tata Motors鈥?revenue. However, a source close to the brand has quashed the suggestions, hinting that while it will always look at ways of strengthening its position in the market, no such talks were currently taking place. Bloomberg says JLR wants to bulk up its range of vehicles, as senior officials believe that is the only way to stay competitive alongside luxury giants like Mercedes and BMW. 2.4 billion (拢1.8bn). However, with Range Rover already pitching models towards the top of the market (拢150,000-plus), space for a super-luxury vehicle above that is compromised. Earlier this year, Jaguar Land Rover invested a sum of more than 拢18 million in ride-hailing service Lyft. Online sources claim JLR is working alongside San Francisco-based Lyft to develop autonomous vehicles. The tech could potentially filter down to Jaguar and Land Rover models in the future. The launch of the I-Pace concept at last year鈥檚 Los Angeles Motor Show hinted the direction in which JLR wishes to go in, though, with electric cars being at the forefront of its development programme. JULES: It鈥檚 not a big SUV and easy to park with the surround view cameras, even if they were a bit slow to load. IAIN: Rangie refuses to make a car without off-road nous. This thing has Terrain Response to cover you over every surface, will wade to a class-leading 650mm and tows 2500kg. You can option even more hardcore off-road kit too. How many Velar owners will go get dirty? 2860) ours has. But it鈥檚 nice to know you can. JULES: It鈥檚 really balanced for an SUV. I could throw it into corners with confidence. My Sunday drive would be on back roads as this engine is a rapid delight. IAIN: The boot鈥檚 good for kiddie stuff but the back seat鈥檚 not as wide as the exterior size suggests. No adult could fit between our two kids鈥?car seats. JULES: The safety kit is ideal with families in mind. We used 11L/100km, which isn鈥檛 great for the family budget. IAIN: Option costs are comical but I鈥檓 sold on the Velar. Standard kit is good enough, there鈥檚 luxury in spades, it drives better than any SUV should and I don鈥檛 think I鈥檇 ever tire of the looks. JULES: Stunning and elegant inside and out with the required special elements prestige buyers demand. Our test Velar may be hugely expensive but feels worth every penny.
