Land Rover Discovery Sport Vs Jaguar F-Pace
If you鈥檙e looking for an upmarket British SUV with lots of style, chances are you might be considering the Land Rover Discovery Sport or the new Jaguar F-Pace. We鈥檙e taking a closer look at both to help decide which is best for you. The Discovery Sport was created as the replacement for the old Freelander and offers brutish good looks, decent off-road ability and the option of seven seats. The F-Pace offers a dose of sportiness and more curvy styling in lieu of some off-road capabilities. Like much of the Land Rover range, the Discovery Sport has upright, squared styling. A metallic mesh grille is flanked by a pair of eye-like projector headlights giving the car an Evoque-like front end. While there are no sharp edges like those on the Defender, the Discovery Sport鈥檚 body has a bluff quality to it that echoes Land Rovers of old. The F-Pace might be Jaguar鈥檚 first crossover SUV but the firm has managed to create a vehicle that looks both sporty and luxurious.
Another day, another brake job . Take a look at this rear hub/brake assembly. It's a pretty typical worn out pad and rotor picture, one that we've addressed with a cleanup and new brake parts a thousand times before. This one turned out different. Thanks to Land Rover master technician Paul Ferreira for spotting a very subtle flaw. Once the brake rotor had been removed, Paul noticed the wheel studs were not quite the same length. Take a look at what he saw, and see if you pick it up. It's a small enough thing that I'll bet 99% of technicians would not give this a second glance. Knowing that something was wrong, he looked a little harder. Here's what he found. It's kind of scary to think that the heads were popped off of three of five wheel studs on the right rear of this 2002 Range Rover. Why did that happen? I have no idea, other than accumulated stress. Why this wheel and not the others? I don't know that either, maybe just luck. The studs must have been broken for a while, because the lugs were all tight even though some were pulled halfway through the hub. Presumably they pulled a little farther every time a wheel was torqued into place, and they would have eventually gotten to the point where they'd have given way, perhaps suddenly. The moral of this story - check the wheel studs whenever they are exposed for service. Sometimes part like this - bits we think of as permanent - really aren't. The two models have some distinguishing features-the base SE adds black bumpers, while the HSE gets body-color pieces, as well as a rear spoiler-and an appearance package bestows a distinct grille and other trim distinctions to the base version. Inside, the LR2's interior is a lookalike for the larger Range Rovers in some ways, but it's less rich and doesn't have the lavish wood fittings of the more expensive vehicles in the Land Rover lineup. Vertical elements like the vents and door handles keep the interior from looking too low, and a strip of wood on the dash touches on Range Rover tradition. There's a single powertrain offered in the 2010 LR2, and it provides adequate acceleration and poor fuel economy. The LR2 shares a 3.2-liter inline-six with the Volvo XC60, in fact. It propels the LR2 to 60 mph in 8.4 seconds. The gearbox is a responsive, smooth-shifting six-speed automatic that includes a manual-shift mode and a sport mode for more engaged drivers. While it's not terribly quick off the line, the LR2 does feel responsive at highway speed and when passing.
