There were three iron doors from this room one west, one east and another which led away into another long corridor. The door to the west just led into a large room which was probably just a store room. The door to the east led towards the river and the corridor was down a few steps and into 3 or 4 inches of water. There was a sharp right hand turn and some hundred yards or so ahead I could see a slight glimmer of light. Sloshing through the water I headed towards the light source, being wary that there weren't any more holes in the floor hidden by the water. Ahead of me was another iron door half open and I went through into a large area lit by the sun through slits in the concrete wall overlooking the river. I was in one of the many pill boxes that were to defend the river banks. Subsequent reports suggest there is no access from the fort to these boxes but I can assure you there is because I have been there. I didn't go any further as I was rather worried about how long my cycle battery would last.
Anyway Larry plodded on and the only time I needed to engage diff lock once on the stone steps. Ok, I can spot people who have not camped a lot from a mile off; we had a few with us. The guys in the Freelander negotiated a warm bed in a static van on their 2nd night camping, can鈥檛 blame them really, it was getting cold and windy. There was the Defender which had a lot of kit on it. The D2 had a brand new tent which was being tried in anger for the 1st time. All had booked breakfast in the farm house, except Paul us and a couple of others. The people who obviously had camped before did exactly what we did, get your home up and running ASAP, get the cooker on and the kettle hot. We put our tent behind a wall with Larry to the left where to give us as much protection from the wind as possible, it was getting quite bad.
Both the Discovery I and the Discovery II have a radius arm style suspension. However, the Discovery II comes with air suspension in the rear. While this does increase ride quality and help it off-road, the air-bags are prone to failure. Many people end up swapping the air-bags out for coil springs which are much cheaper and obviously more reliable. The Discovery II also has slightly stronger radius arm bushings. Swapping air suspension for coil springs. The Discovery II also had an optional sway bar system called ACE, also known as 鈥淎ctive Cornering Enhancement.鈥?This system used a hydraulic pump and hydraulic rams to make the Discovery II corner extremely flat. This system can also completely disengage at low speed to increase articulation. The real differences are the air suspension, radius arm bushings, and optional ACE system. Other than that the Discovery I and Discovery II share the same suspension.
